UPVC French Doors

Postby Gazoom » 21 Aug 2006 15:37

Hi, can anybody help? I've got a problem with a set of upvc doors in that I need to change the euro cylinder on the door that the other door locks into and the retaining screw is not visible. The only screws visible are the screws holding the keeps. The only other screws I can locate are at the top and bottom of the door near to the shoot bolts. Thanks

Can you see a hole but not the screw head?

If so you have to lift the handle up which will move the obstruction out of the way and the screw head will be visable.

Yale Systems

In addition to the above, some Yale Multipoints use an Allen type grub screw to secure the cylinder. Look for a hole adjacent and at right angles to the bottom of the cylinder, on the edge of the door. Sometimes they might have a plug or, as Shrub suggested, you might have to lift the handle to expose the grub screw. I think a 4 mm Allen key does the trick.

Not sure how much info I can give out on here as I am fairly new to the site ! What I would say to you is if you were a bit more open with your profile then people would be more likely and willing to help you.eg location occupation etc.
If you think about the situation you are in and go about the job in a logically way you will work it out for yourself.
The retainer screw is there seek and you will find

Actually after re-reading the post,

Unscrew the keep, you will then find the retaining screw behind that,

Thanks for replies, in answer to question no hole for a retaining screw is visible, neither is a grub screw of any kind. I'm wondering if I have to somehow remove the edge of the door to get to it? I've changed the euro on the other door its the same as a single upvc door, with the retaining screw clearly visible.

Is it an old pair?
I've had this a couple of times where the meeting stile/rebated section is fixed to the door and has to be taken off first to get to the edge of the door, stupid idea I know but there you are.
As I say the only time I've seen this was on a couple of old pairs.

Is the keep a box type part that is held in the edge of the door with 2 or 4 screws?

If so you have to unscrew those screws and then you will see the retaining screw for the euro,

Shrub - likely the keep has nothin to do with this mate. As mentioned before, the locking section of the french doors (ie the fixed half of the door) will more than likely have a UPVC section screwed into the door frame, and its this that the other half of the door locks into. This whole section needs to be removed in order to access the cylinder retaining screw. On more recent installations you can usually access the screw direct. A picture, as always, would help.
