Wafer Locks...

Postby LeaKeD » 30 Mar 2004 10:12

Ok .. everyone tells me its EASY to pick a wafer lock.. I've read all the posts on Wafer Locks.. I have a Wafer Lock with 6 Wafers.. I use my Med. Tension Wrench and my Smaller Half Dimond.. i've spent more then 4 hours tryin to pick it.. do any of you have some Techniques i can use or perhaps im using the wrong tool... what tool should i be using ? how much tension should be used ? And yes i've turned both ways to see if i was turning it the wrong direction..

Thx for help ..

First, I hope you aren't starting to pick locks using a wafer lock. This is just a bad idea, because wafer locks let you really develop bad habits. You should be using slightly more tension that most pin tumbler locks, but again, the force required is truely minimal.

Other things.

You may be up against a wafer lock with a sidebar, which are HARD to pick, so that could be the case. Any information about the manufacturer of the lock, etc ?

To clear things up.. I've had my pick set for over 3 years now.. and this is actually my first encounter with a Wafer Lock..

Um.. E8 and 544 are on the front of the lock.. no actual names. I think my dad got it from some guy at work.. Not sure about SideBars..

Where/what exactly was this lock from? If it's a typical desk or cabinet lock it should probably be only 5 wafers.

Just checking,it isnt a double waifer lock is it.
Most car locks are double waifers.
I normally open waifer locks quite easily using a snake type pick and a wishbone wrench.
The pick i use is a slightly bigger automotive pick, but there should be no problem with using a regular pick.I also always rake the waifers when opening a waifer lock.

If the lock is from ignition, there is a good chance that it is a sidebar lock.

Also, if it's from the ignition, it could be up to 10 wafers. If the lock is mounted to a tool box though, it's most likely a door or trunk lock. If you can ask your Dad what it's from, maybe we can help further.....

If the lock was pulled from a vehicle, some lubrication is almost definately in order. You may also need to flush out some road grime from the lock as well.

Check the back of the lock too, if it's from a gas flap it may only open one way.
