Seems easy enough to gain access, even offers a free trial,
http://www.clearstar.com/obtain/index.htm

Of course you do need to submit some proof you are a locksmith or security specialist.

I'm gonna try the free trial, thx for the tip.

I wasn't saying that it wasn't easy, I was just saying that ClearStar is strictly for trading locksmiths, and that they go to reasonable lengths to ensure that. If you're a trading locksmith, then its a great resource.

I was just thanking you ;)

I was thinking of taking the Foley-Belsaw course, does anyone know if this would then qualify me as a "locksmith"? I would of course be interested in doing some part time work after I get a lot better/more experienced. But I am just trying to find out if this is a good way to start out, aside from picking locks :)

I'm taking this course. It helps. It at least shows your serious about locksmithing. Not every one can take an apprenticeship or want to. And it would qualify for one form of requirement. I plan on joining a local association as well, and the national locksmith too. That's 2 forms of requirements.

I'm not sure whats required to actually work as a locksmith in NYS. I assume some form of licensing, after all it is NY and if there is a way to charge some one for some thing, NY has it!

Right now I just want to learn as much as I can. Since I was involved in the security industry, this just seems like a logical addition and also fun too. At some point I want to work part time at my own leisure.

Back to Foley, you get a student ID number when you join and a certificate when you complete Foley. This will at least permit you to purchase locksmith tools including bump keys. Also, ask for the $599 price!!!

Bud Wiser:

Thanks for the heads up with the price, I have to save up a bit more money before it will be financially feasible for me to take the course, but I will definitely mention the $599 price.
