Help Needed- Old Suitcase/Trunk lock.

Well, I bought this at a yardsale today for $2.00, along with a dozen turntables, half in there origional packaging, for a decent price. Looks like some high quality ones too. Anyone wants a record player, lemme know




So, the main problem is that its locked.

Heres the lock. Ive tried most things I can think of, to open it, to no avail.






So, what do you guys think? Any ideas on how to get it open?

perhaps one of these would help.



This is probably some sort of single lever lock since it attaches to the outside of the trunk, everything is inside that round hump. I can't imagine more than 1 lever.

can you see anything if you use a flashlight to look inside the lock?

here's another steamer trunk lock key photo I found, maybe you can cut something out from some steel or file down a hacksaw blade?

how sweet is that! I don't have any suggestions to help you get it open, but I'm curious - does it feel like it's empty, or do you think there is anything inside? perhaps the lost capone loot Geraldo was looking for...

I would make a key now, buts it 12:50 am, and my parents would be kinda PO if I started grinding a key now.

So, by the time I get up at 11 tommorrow, eat breakfast, and shower, I should get to making a key around 12 ish.

So I'll post it tommorrow afternoon.

I'm just the same. I've stayed up all night waiting for both my parents to wake up, so some of the time I'm grinding at 7 am

A small "L" shaped wire should do it.

Like someone said above, it will only be one lever, so follow the path of the key with the short end of the L inserted as you would the key.

Any resistance is probably the lever. Carry on pushing it around the lock, and it should open.

This was one of the first things I tried, I was using a bulldog clip, but it still wouldnt open..

I think Ill have another go at it using the bulldog clip.

I've got a situation with the identical lock. LSS provided a good pick of the key which squelchtone posted. It appears to be more of a sliding ring on the inside of the lock that latches to the case. Normal pick tools would'nt get around enough as the front of the keyway spins and acts as a curtain as your rotating the tool.

As was mentions, a thick guage wire or a rouch cut key should work. I did'nt have the tools to make a key when I was trying to open my trunk. Plz let us know if you get it to work.

Thank you, this helps a lot as well.... I think this means that the first key posted wont work, but maybe the second will.

Just opened one of these last week. The steamer I worked on was rusted in the lock area, and so a paperclip or standard wire didn't seem to want to work. Basically I used a "dental-style" probe as found in those cheap $3.00 sets to push the single lever to the left and upwards to release the latch. Took a bit of fishing around but it worked. Use a good strong penlight to locate it.

Varjeal, did the "latch" look like a ring? If not, what did it ollk like?

Im beginning to think this one may be damaged internally......

Not exactly. From what I could see inside the lock it was basically just a "catch" type of mechanism.

Well, I still can't get this bugger open.........

I'm starting to wonder if something is really wrong inside.

Anyone have any breakdown photos of this lock?
