Wafer locks and tension

Postby eulachon » 30 Mar 2004 23:40

Well, I haven't picked a wafer lock yet, but I found one to try - it's on one of those ashtray things that are stuck on walls sometimes... I don't know why it's locked, as all that's in there is cigarette butts? Oh well, it gives me a wafer lock to try. Luckily there are no butts inside as it would stink up my place :?

Anyways, the cylinder has absolutely no give in it, unlike all the pin tumblers I've tried so far. As in when I apply tension, it feels like I stuck my wrench in between two bricks or something, no looseness whatsoever.

I tried applying little to tons of tension, but nothing will set with single picking or raking. What's up? Is the cylinder just seized or something?

With wafers I prefer to try tension both ways - the way that moves the most is the direction you should start picking.

If it's not moving at all it's probably kaput and worth taking apart to learn (a) why, (b) how (c) how not to do that again!
sledgehammers make excellent back up picks!

It doesn't move, in, out, CW, CCW, at all. Solid like a rock (before I touched it, even!). Busted, I guess...

I will release the ashtray back into the wild, then. Don't want to break it apart as I did find it on the sidewalk after all, I think someone broke it off the wall on Friday night, and they might want to put it back up.
