Picking Tools?

As you can see I am a newbie on this forum and I am sorry if this question has been asked in the past.

I live in New Zealand. As far as I can find there are no sources that sell lock picks or other tools here (But if anyone from NZ does know, lemme know as well thanks). At the moment I have no access to a credit card so I can't import them from anywhere overseas.

So what I need to know is, what is everyone's preferred household lock picking tool? I bought a small screwdriver (with the intension to use it as a torque wrench) for a dollar, but it was still too big and got in the way. I tried using a sturdy paper clip as a lock pick, but it just bent.

safety pin or a hair pin for a pick. i always shape them like hooks. for a tension wrench i have this bent nail that i filed down it was my first and i still keep it handy.

My first ones were real thick butterfly paperclips. They did pretty darn good for paperclips. Eventually I tried my hand at the hacksaw blade thing and really like those picks (Even the freak one that works better as a back scratcher). :wink:

For a tention wrench, I used a small piece of my electricians fish tape bent and ground to a much skinnier so it fits very easy into the keyway. I like this tool.

My next project will be to buy a set.

One day, when I learn to use a computer, I am going to have to post pics of my ultimate safety pin tension wrench. All you do is take a 6 cm (large) safety pin and bend the needle bit out and away from the head. Then fashion the needle head into a tension wrench head by making a 90 degree bend with 1cm then a 180 degree bend with 0.5cm they work great and are super cheap and easy.

Picks are best made from windshield wiper inserts. If you find one with god dimensions, this can be done with little work,

Well supposing you don;'t have a credit card, I am assuming your undr 18? Assuming.. so don;t flip.. people tend to do that. Anywho, i don;t know of the legalities and such.. so make your own.

Get a windshield wiper and take out the two metal strips. Either using hand files and patience.. or a dremel and a steady hand, make some picks.

Always runt hem through sand paper and theyw ill be fine,

I am have bad luck finding wiper blades with metal strips! Although I have not went out of my way to look for them, the few I have run in to have hard plastic strips. May be I can use them for kwiksets?

I started with a safety pin and a long scrap of metal I bent over 3 times. I would say a ground down nail with a bend in it and a safety pin that "dips" would be good for starters.

I started lockpicking with a safety pin as a pick and a hairpin as a lock..Of course...it works only on small or medium padlocks so you should think about picks... :roll:

I'm in NZ too and spent hours looking for a local supplier. Found one finally, but they had a policy on their site saying that lock picks were restricted items. I sent them an email questioning it, and didn't get a reply.

The fact is, there are no restrictions and prohibitions on lock picks, as long as you don't commit or attempt to commit a crime with them. So... borrow someone's card or get a regular job and become elligible for one.

I started not too long ago and have been using a bent paper clip as my pick. I liked being able to slide it smoothly over the pins, so I bent it to be like a triangle pick. For the wrench, I mutilated a metal hangar (warehouse kind), hammered and bent it to an L shape.

I my self use the hack saw blade filed down in the shape of a pick. And for a tortion rench i use the winsheld wiper insert. I my self am looking for picks for the next step and what not, but worring about legal repercutions. I hope this helped.

have you tried turning the hairpin into a pick? it worked once for me, although I'm not sure someone could pick a hairpin with another hairpin :lol:

I'm just kidding with ya, hairpins are nice because they are cheap and take very little modding. Some of my best tension wrenches are hair clips that are just cut off and bent.

Hey, LockNewbie...that was the same first thing that I opened too. I thought I was really something at the time, LOL. Then realized I could open it up with a bread crust shoved in there (well not literally, but it isn't that hard...)

Good to see there are people other than me from NZ here.

Anyways, me and a friend are getting into the art of lockpicking together. He had access to his parents credit card so we ordered an 8 peice set each of the net and they arrived today.
