I was at HOPE Number Six also. What was rather unpleasant for me was having my right wrist trapped inside a cuff made by Valor for about two hours. (There is a photo of my trapped wrist on one of the pages featuring photos which were taken at HOPE Number Six.) The only handcuff key that I had with me broke (It was part of a novelty key fob.) when I tried to free myself, and nobody else present at the time had a handcuff key either.

This set of Valor handcuffs seemed to be something in-between novelty and professional in terms of workmanship. (The same holds true for their knives, too.)

Despite the efforts of several people, nobody was able to shim this cuff off of my wrist. (They were all trying to use one of my slim tension wrenches for a shim.) Nobody was really that sure if the cuff was double-locked either. An attempt to lubricate my wrist and slide the cuff off proved to be too painful to fully execute. I was really starting to worry by this point.

It was not until later, when one of the TOOOL fellows returned from dining out somewhere, that my wrist was freed. He simply just used one of his own well-made handcuff keys.

The lesson to take from all this is that whenever one starts playing with handcuffs, it is important to have ready access to more than just one key.

Hey, I have a set of CheaperThanDirt brand cuffs (cheap but decent) and I just wanted to put in some tips and comments about it. For who ever said why would someone have this stuff, just like illusionists its a great party trick. Real fun especially when they try to get out of it. Did you buy that shim? Because if you did I would have to say it being a waste of money. A bobby pin I find is much better and CAN get the double lock. You can get a pack of about 30 for a dollar or two. They are much easier and if one or two were ever to be found on you it wouldn't be thought of as much (also easier to hide, clips onto stuff). In a few minutes I'll post some of my pics.

I'd like to see some one shim or pick their way free from thumb cuffs :)

What to do: Take the bobby pin and strip off the plastic stuff that prevents people from stabbing themselfs in the head with pliers/wire cutters by holding the pin with the small screwdriver and the hand grip in the pictures. Then just bend it out a bit and your done. Easy stuff and you can make a lot of them fast or make em when you need em. To bend the other side make sure to bend it away from the pin on the side that isn't straight (shown in the picture). I use the cuff hole to bend it, only do a very little piece of the end, getting too much won't work, experiment with it. That's pretty much it.

Now, try that with a pair of "real" handcuffs...

These are "real" handcuffs, they are nickel plated steel. They just aren't as strong the police carry, same lock mechanisms.

They are " real" novelty ones. Yes they may be nickel plated but a real pair will not let a bobby pin be shimmed in like that, the tolerances are alot better on real ones.

I'm not bashing what you have done, I'm just saying it won't work on "police" or LEO issue cuffs.

Not being able to be shimmed as your saying, meaning that your pair are much tighter in the gears?

There is a few issues with this.

One: the spacing on LEO issue handcuffs are alot more exact than on his knock off pair. You say it yourself:

Two: How does this unlock the double lock? all you are doing is shimming. please explain the way you manage to unlock the double lock.

Three: If you actually DO get arrested and put into cuffs, two things happen. 1. the handcuffs are DOUBLE locked. 2. If for some reason you get out of the handcuffs while in custody, I hope you really, really like "attitude adjustments"

Also, with the double locked, you would not be able to get a bobby pin near the teeth, There is no space. Trust me, I've worked and taught proper handcuffing techniques for a few years now.
