Bump keys and lock bumping finally have their own area. Discuss making bump keys, proper bumping techniques, and countermeasures here.

Thats why they arent working then

Remove from between 0.5mm - 1mm from the shoulder and 1mm - 1.5mm from the tip,

I cant make out very well from the pic but it doesnt look like you have,

I havent yet but I may try anything.

I tried it and it didnt help. Of course I got my friend's weiser lock open without altering the shoulders or the tip of the key one bit.

Are you useing the pull back one pin method or putting the key in all the way?

Are you putting tension on all the time or as soon as youve bumped it?

Um, pulling out one pin, and its just a kind of soft pressure until the second I hit it.

Right well if you alter your tip and shoulder and put the key all the way in you should see a bit of movement when you press the key in and let go,

When youve removed enough so it does this a small amount then you simply bump the key and then tension the lock the split secomnd afterwards,

It takes timing but is a better way of doing it and will work much better once practised,

Well I already had a key that was set up just for all of that... but I threw it away because I thought I screwed it up. . Thanks for the help anyway!

something that helped me was to have a extra normal key of the same type an old one. and keep comparing the spacing as i filed. the normal old key will have little dots on top where the pins rest. it helps keep the spacing correct. those peaks that you leave are like little ramps for the pins when you bump the key thats what makes the pins fly up . i have had better luck when they do this nice and smooth. hope it helps :)

yea i made one too

but its not 100% effective, but it does work and im impressed with the results, but I would rather have a key cutter for exact cuts so I could utilize the minimal movement technique

yey! I just made a bump key. And it works. I went out today and bought a set of hobby files (6 for $17...) and a few KW1 (Kwikset) keyblanks. I tried to make a copy of a key according to a sticky on here, but I messed up on the last pin out of five...ugh. too short...

Then I decided to make a bumpkey seeing as how one of the pins from the lock was an 8 or 9 depth. I spent the next hour and a half filing down the spaces, adjusting the angles so it wouldn't get stuck in the cylinder, and toying with the bottom shoulder and rim above the top shoulder because it was too long to fit the keyway of the lock. Then I came to this thread because I remembered you had to take some brass of the top should and tip. I read, and filed. Within 15 tries I had bumped my first lock. Then I did it two more times right away. It's kinda fun...and it worked out so well. It's no replacement for lockpicking, but I just think it's cool how it works. And all the mechanics inside the lock that you have to time right to get it to work. I'll have a few copies made tomorrow so I don't have to worry about breaking it.

One funny story: When I first heard about bumping, I decided to try and see if I could get all the pins to jump with a normal key. I inserted the key almost all the way into the lock and literally slapped it with my hand and turned, and to my amazement it opened on the first try. I guess that's what I get for using the key that came with the lock
