big countries in lock technology

Postby salem » 9 Sep 2006 6:05

hi, i'm searching information over lock industry, and checking up the list of countries that are advanced on lock technology. But i can't get any report on that.

It seems that US, Finland, Israel has many big names, while lock industry in China is flourishing. German has very big locksmith organization and lesser big names.

Does anyone know where i can get a comprehensive report to see the global development of lock industry? Thanks a lot!

Hmm interesting question,

I could be wrong but i would think there isnt such a single report, i think you wpould have to get he stats from each manufacturer in each country and simply study the data yourself and make your own report,

Some one like greyman may be better on this as hes done a lot of research on diferant locks and their origins i think,

The only one the U.S. has is medeco....and schlage primus, but you don't see many of them. Also, Medeco is owned by ASSA-Abloy, who also happens to own 95% of the other high-security lock manufacturers in the world--keep that in mind.

assa and abloy became assa-abloy and they also own mul-t-lock, chubb, medeco, union. as well as not-so-high security stuff like arrow, sargent, corbin-russwin, and yale.

from a north american point of view, assa-abloy controls almost the entire high security market, but if you are more interested in the countries in which the locks were developed

abloy is from finland
assa is from sweden
mul-t-lock is from israel
scorpion is korean
schlage is american

Actually I think Schlage was originally british, or at least the founder was.

The funny thing is that Yale was originally American but now the majority of their market is in the U.K.--it's rare you see Yale in the U.S. at all.

lock industries/countries

Postby greyman » 9 Sep 2006 9:15

Thanks for the plug, Shrub :)

It is an interesting and complicated question to answer. I think that every country has a lock industry. Some countries have more small companies and others only a few bigger ones. For instance Japan, to my knowledge, has only Goal, Showa, Miwa and maybe one or two others that dominate the market. The UK is dominated by lever lock entities like Chubb, Legge, Union and (someone please fill in the blanks, I can't remember!). Australia has Lockwood and Australian Lock Co (though Lockwood has been sold). Germany has quite a few (Abus, DOM, Winkhaus, Pfaffenhain, Gege, ...), Switzerland has Keso and Kaba, Austria has EVVA. France has predominantly Fichet but also a lot of smaller ones like Deny Fontaine, FTH etc. In the US Medeco, Assa Abloy, Kaba are big (who owns S&G now?). MulTLock is also quite big. But that's the catch really, there's only a few major players left in the industry globally - Assa Abloy and Kaba being the main ones. Sooner or later they are going to gobble up what's left of the decent lock making companies. Any company they don't eat will probably just fade away anyway due to the intense competition. There are also niche markets like cycle chain locks and padlocks that aren't necessarily covered by the big companies.

I think Yale is actually owned by Assa Abloy. They just kept the name.

There are some interesting sites covering eg UK lock companies in the early days. What happened on a national level in the mid to late 1900s is now happening globally.

Thanks for all information and i found it extremely useful.

It's pretty surprising that Scandinavia seems to be the biggest dominant power in the lock industry. Many popular brands like Mul-t-lock and Yale are currently owned by ASSA Abloy. Kaba is also very big too.

It'd be so interesting to study the lock industry. We use it every day, but its industry is a stranger to the public yet.

The history of locks is also interesting! You can find a lot on that by googling it a bit!
