Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Hey, I did I search before I posted this to make sure it hadn't been posted before I asked. Is there any strategy to dissasmbling a masterlock so that you can study it? I can see some sort of crimp on the back, but I'd like to take it apart so I can still have a working model to study. Does anyone have any suggestions, strategies, or tools?
Here's a photo:
Just a general master lock.
Thanks a lot,

Oh double geeze, I'm sorry, the sticky was for dissasembling padlocks, not combo locks. I hate to be that spastic poster. Any combo-lock suggestions.
Wow,

The trick is to get under the crimp; once you have an edge up just use pliers to fold it back all the way around. I haven't opened one in a while, but I probably used a dremel to make a notch that I could start prying at. Don't start prying with anything that you'll regret breaking.
The result will be kind of messy, so you can try cutting off the pryed ring all-together, or bending it back down once the back is off.

i have disassembled quite a few meself. ill post some pics for ya, but really, try a flathead screwdriver under the outside lip on the back, and as soon as you get a piece up, use needle nose pliers and regular pliers to peel the entire lip back. then it will be open.
another technique that works, is if it DOESNT have a keyhole, then you can drill a hole into it where the keyhole WOULD be. the thicker metal beneath the outter thin layer has a hole in it. so drill there with a drill that will let you plier up the rest. do not try drilling anywhere else, lest ye be willing to ruin the lock or the drill.
that should get you started fairly well i think. and keep an eye out for my hopefully soon to be in depth guide about everything there is to know about master combo locks.
***note, i have only begun to work on this thinger, it could be a while, but if/when it does get out there, it will be (bleeping) amazing.

Thanks for the help guys. I simply used a pair of needle nosed pliers and worked the outer edge for a bit. Sure enough, once a small section of the crimp was lifted the rest of the crimp followed quite easily. I'm amazed at how easy it was to open this masterlock. It's great to be able to see inside, and I also have a much better understanding of how they work. Again, thanks for the help.

Yes your sig needs to be at least 2/3rds of its present height,
What i would perhaps do would be to grind the lip off before prying leaving 2 or 3 taps around the edge that i wouldnt pry upp fully and then use them to hold the back on again afterwards,
Im only guessing though as ive not had one,

aye, that lip of metal is...well...weak. it is so weak, as soon as you can get something under that lip, the lock is scrap. its open so fast. i usually bend all that metal around the outside and press it flat with regular pliers and then file around it to soften the sharp points.
and again, im working (hopefully a successful) on a huge fatty guide to master combo padlocks. with pics and all sorts of stuff. maybe a week away.

Yeah, a guide would be great, there are so many bizzare variation of the "standard" padlock.
At my high school I had a masterlock to lock up my supplies in the art studio. I was compadres with the teacher and she gave me a few extra locks that students had left behind in previous years. I didn't know the combo to any of them, but on the back they had a little keyway with a 3-pin tumbler lock. I practiced on those little locks for hours, and my first pick ever was one of these ancient Masterlocks.
Now that I'm in college, we have a whole new genre of padlocks, none of them have the keyway on the back!
anywhoo,
J
