I told you I was genuinely interested in this bloody lock and so today I made the bugger.
Took about two hrs start to finnish and works relatively well.
I mannaged to get over the weakness of the key by thickening it and changing the grain orientation slightly.
I decided to only use the tools that they would have used (in principle) i.e. saws, chisels, drill.
Although as I was going for speed I used powered versions (chopsaw and cordless drill).
This was fine till I got to the slots for the pins, and have to confess that I cheated and got the roughter out
So anyhows the bugger only works, a bit stiff and awkward at first but once you get used to the feel of it, it's ok.
Having now made it I feel that this is the sort of job the poor old apprentice would have been given, (all that wackin' with a mallet and a chisel that I would doubt could be sharpened to anything like what we can today) with the tradesman taking care of the pins and slots maybe.
I've gotta work out how to put pickies up then I'll post & show it.
The only thing now is, do I fit it to the door that I should have been making while I was actually faffin' about.
