I am very interested in lock picking, i think it's an art, and i wanna learn how to do it, i don't wanna rob anything, i just think it's cool

.
The first lock i wanna pick is definitly the lock on the doors on my house, here's a pic of it, my digital camera sucks, but am sure the exp lockpickers will know what tool to use, cuz i think it's pretty basic.

Just thought I would get that out of the way.

That's a standard euro cylinder pin tumbler lock. Standard lockpicks will do fine.

Oh yeah, "Don't pick locks you use."

Panicked posts in all caps after the top pins fallin to the keyway give us all headaches.

If it rotates 180 degrees and won't turn anymore, take the back of a pick or any appropriately sized long straight instrument and press it down in to the bottom of the keyway while turning the plug.

Read the MIT guide.("disc tumbler" is actually called a "wafer tumbler." Disc locks are the abloy style ones.)

Easy on the tension.

Don't pick locks you don't own.

Search.

If you're going to take apart locks, do it inside a plastic bag over a towel on a clean surface.

Buy an easier practice lock to start with, kwikset, bird, titan, no name generic.

Slimline picks are better for european locks.(euro profiles)

Start with one pin stack and work your way up.

Safes/Cars/High Security in general are advanced forum topics.

Read the stickies.

Don't order locksmith books if you're from australia.
No, no one cares you ordered lockpicks.(cept possibly your parents if relevant)
No, they don't actually check to see if you are a locksmith.
Yes, lockpickshop.com/lockpicks.com are good trustworthy sites.
Get the 8 piece southord set, or the 14 piece if you're feeling adventurous.
No, don't get the jackknife/any other gimmicky novelty set.

My favorite picks are:
the snowman, half diamond, peterson gem(southord long hook with the tip cut off halfway through the curve at a 45 degree angle.(perpandicular to the curve)) and more recently: the motorola shaped double bump rake.

Yes, people are judgmental of lockpicking. Some will think you're a criminal based on possessing the skill alone. It's not going to go away any more than racism or any other form of prejudice. Quite like paintball, switchblades, butterfly knives, airsoft, and everything else "misunderstood", being overtly pc is a waste of effort. Feel free to try to change peoples minds on the subject. Learn the word sheeple and use liberally.

Carrying pick sets is a bad idea. A tension wrench and double sided pick in the insole of your shoe will do fine for emergencies if you insist on carrying something. It's better to learn to improvise macguiver style.

Good source of locks? Ebay.

Prepaid visa/master cards from the grocery store do a financially challenged internet body good.

Yes, bump keys work.
Yes they are cool.
The easiest place to get them are the ebay depth keys.

Your local locksmith may or may not be a nice person, the only way to know is to talk to him. Tread lightly and bring up rekeyings and your lock collection before dropping the pick bomb.

Bogota picks are supposed to be excellent rakes.

Single pin picking is important to know how to do.

Brinks/Abus/American brand locks are good challenge locks when you think you've got down easy padlocks/house locks.

Go high security/obscure from there.

I think TOWCH was trying to make the point that every one of the replies he posted could have been found easily on the site. The multiple posts were probably to highlight the fact that he was well and truly spoonfeeding this guy.
