First lock picked?

Postby zososg » 14 Sep 2006 3:57

just wondering what peoples first locks they ever picked were.

i just did my first ever about 10 minutes ago, a master lock no.1 and then i pulled out a master no.5 and did it in about 5 minutes it was such a cool feeling!

what makes a lock any harder to pick than another when theyre the same amount of pins?

i'd like to add that i made my own tools, a tension wrench out of a small file that i heated, bent, and tempered. and my pick was made out of a grinded saw blade. (il post pics)

My *first ever* lock was a Union 3 lever...

This was during the days of scrounging around tool suplier's websites looking for photos of tools I could make - There weren't any guides back then about lever locks and it was mostly trial and error. :)

Cylinder locks came after, and the first one I picked was a Tricircle 265 padlock, opened by agressive raking. I used a half diamond pick I made out of a soft hacksaw blade and a wrench made out of a piece of random metal. Very rough, but it worked, for a while anyway haha.

It depends really - if a lock has a small pin next to a big pin, and followed by another small pin you have to try very hard not to touch the big pin, yet still lifting the small pin behind it. Even a simple lock can be made hard this way.

More expensive locks are better made, and the tollerances are much lower. You get less 'feek' and I've found it's veyr easy to unset some pins by accident. The more expensive the lock, the better the tollerances... As a general rule anyway.

Nice work on your first lock. :)

Hmmm, lets see. I guess my first lock was when i was 6 years old. I had a tiny toy lock and a paperclip, a few minutes later the lock was open :P

But my first cilinder lock was more than 10 years later, i read about lockpicking on the internet and searched for an old lock in my house. Found a padlock without a key, made some tools and started to pick. And after i guess 15 minutes the lock was open :).

Now im using the repin method to practice. 2 normal pins and 3 mushrooms, cant find any pick info about that :(

The first lock I picked would be a KIK (could've been a Kwikset or Schlage), then the Dead Bolt which used the same key, the second lock I picked was a Master No.5 Padlock.

It was with a half diamond pick I made from a Precision 5 pen clip and fastened it to a piece of broken antenna. I still have it today and it's around 11 years old now.

My fist lock was a Danish Ruko lock - it was very difficult so I repinned it and made it a 4 pin lock with no spool pins (was originally a 6 pin with all spools). I felt so gifted -

Now, years and years later I'm fighting with a High Security Medeco - I've come some way

My first was a warded padlock, squire I think, when I was a teenager (many moons ago)

Picked with a filed down key, a skeleton key I called it at the time

Those were the days eh!!

my first lock was a wafer lock on a drawer, after that I was hooked and moved on to a kwikset handset. I remember that it took forever to pick, and I almost gave up on it all together. Looking back it's kind of funny that a kwikpick ever seemed like THAT much of a challenge...back then you probably could have told me that they were "top of the line, high security" locks and I would have believed you. LOL
