are Peterson "Just Picks" plastic good for Schlage

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

are Peterson "Just Picks" plastic good for Schlage

Postby Squelchtone » 17 Sep 2006 4:53

I do most of my current picking with a Southord C1510 slimline set, but I've had my eye on the Peterson Just Picks plastic set for quite some time.

First, does the set come with 7 or 9 picks? The Peterson site suggests you buy the half snowman and the postal on the individual page, and underneath it says "Contents: 9 plastic handled picks" but I think you are only getting 7 picks... Which is it? (this is the $33 dollar set SP-P2)

If I do get the blue plastic just picks, will they seem huge compared to my slimlines and how are they in Schlage SC1 keyways? just right? too big?

I did notice the foam handled slimline JP-SS set, but I like the look of the plastic handles, I'm just not feeling the foam right now.. anyone care to sway me in one direction or another? =)

Thanks

Definately get them, I love my Petersons. Trust me, they'll be fine in a SC1 keyway--I use them on Yale's paracentric Y1 keyway with no trouble.

Just saw the last part of your post--first of all, Peterson beats the hel# out of southord as far as materials (Peterson steel is great) and quality go, and the blue plastic handles will definately be more ergonomic and give much better feedback than foam; not only that but I imagine those foam handles will tear after a while.

And don't forget you need to be a lockie to order directly from Peterson, so if you're not just go to lockpicks.com and get them from there. I've ordered from them quite a bit, they're quite reliable.

Squelchtone I recently ordered from Peterson's. My order actually didn't show up for 2 weeks so I called and spoke to Ken directly. It turns out the post office dropped my package in water and couldn't read the label, but he sent them out again. I also talked to him about the HOPE 6 lock picking set, it was actually made with his government steel (glad I got two sets!)

I would recommend calling in your order because we actually talked for a while he was a real pleasant guy!

dude, ph, thats so cool. thats kinda like when i ordered my SO set, it took a bit long, so i sent an email to the site, and it was signed by the company prez, and i had a few emails back and forth with him bout the picks, and whatnot. real nice guy too.he sent my picks out a day early since i asked where they were and let them go on "faith money" or something like that, since my check hadnt cleared yet.

all in all, these guy are really nice guys usually.

If we really want to make this into an off-topic about nice dealers  I can also reccomend the guys at lockpicks.com - they have a pro locksmith that I spoke to some time ago about some different advanced picking that wasn't mentioned on these boards. Helpful and friendly.

I've got the red texture rubber handles and there is no way in helll they will ever tear off! Very comfortable handles. I do plan on trying a plastic handle.

Another thing you may want to consider getting for schlage SC1 is this special key blank tension wrench!
http://www.lockpicks.com/index.asp?Page ... ProdID=546

it's made from an actual schlage key blank and fits perfectly in place leaving a lot of room for your pick. After seeing this tension I tried in vain making my own. I finally broke out and bought one, glad I did, it's very good quality and works great! I'm not one for using tension wrenches on top of key ways, so this was perfect for me :)

I'll try to get some close up pics of it posted soon.

BTW, Peterson does not ask for proof if you are a lockie or any questions at all, at least for picks.

I forgot to mention, I've been using Peterson's picks in an SC1 keyway with no problems. I make pretty much exclusive use of the "reach" or deep curve pick, but I need to start practicing with other tools.

If you buy just picks plastic it comes with all 9, if you buy just picks rubber it only comes with 7. It seems the website doesn't get updated all that much. I have the just picks rubber, if you end up with plastic maybe we can try each other's out if you end up at a TOOOL Boston meeting sometime.

Until there is a Toool in NYS, I may come to Boston. Will give me a good excuse to go to Boston. One of my favorite cities on the East Coast.

Is there anyone here who has both the rubber and plastic handles? What do you think of the difference?

In all fairness, I think the difference will be too subjective. I spoke to Ken over at Peterson, it's not long distance for me. He said there are hardcore fans for both. Just depends on personal preference. The plastics were older and they designed the ruber texture by popular demand for those that wanted a smaller firm handle along the line of other popular handle sizes.

You can buy just one pick which I plan on doing to see for myself rather then take a survey. I can say this, if your spending a lot of time on a single lock the rubber texture is very comfortable. But I still want to see how I like the plastic. I was suprised how much I liked Southern Specialties rippled metal core handles. So you never know until you try it yourself.

That's sound advice -- but it is also costly. I am looking to buy a full set with either plastic or rubber handles... the expense would add up with shipping costs etc if I were buying single picks at a time.

Hopefully if you do end up comparing the two you can share your experience with us. I realize that it will have your personal slant, but it's still worthwhile information -- so far I haven't heard any comparison between the two handles on this site.

In the mean time I think I am going to pick up a couple of single Rytan picks to add to my set... Their ergonomic handles look great.

You might want to look at this pic by Matt Blaze, it is a full size pic of all the different Peterson picks,
http://www.crypto.com/photos/misc/picks ... ndles.html

also take the time to explore the rest of his site, very informative, even if much is old.

As for picks, the more you research and read the more you will find that not all picks are created equal, again Matt does a nice comparision of some of the different brands.

I got a photo of the different brands I have all with the small hook pick. You can see the slight difference in design.
http://www.anarkey.net/images/pick-blades.jpg

Combining different brands does not seem like a bad idea, or make your own. That way you can have all the variants. Peterson makes picks others don't make, like the extended curve pick which is on the line of a Falle Safe curve. Speaking of Falle Safe, they are very expensive but Southern Specialties offers a good replica of them pretty cheap,
http://www.lockpicktools.com/lockpicks.htm
a real set of falle safe picks will set you back about $200!

I would keep all the different brands in mind. There are some Lab and Dino picks I wouldn't mind adding to my collection too.

As soon as I get enough of an order ready for Peterson I will order some more single picks from there. Not a priority, but still on my list :)

I do plan on posting more about different picks and styles.
