Grrr! Standard? What standard?

European hardware -lever locks, profile cylinders specific for European locks. European lock picks and European locks.

Grrr! Standard? What standard?

Had a job today, changing a euro cylinder. Not a problem, except could I find one the right size? In the end, my cunning plan of asking "Do you want a thumbturn to comply with the fire reg.s?" swung it, then it was off to cut many keys.

So, I did a little stock take. I have over 35 euro and oval cylinders, in 25 different sizes and types, with and without thumbturn. And I don't even bother carrying brass cylinders, they are all (bar one) chrome. Yet I *still* don't have enough to cover every job!

Must be great to only have 5 brands in the whole country (USA) or to *only* need euro's (Europe). My poor van is straining!

Someone needs to design a variable length euro cylinder, and fast.

Variable length?? Dom, Evva, Pfaffenhain, just to name a few all have modular systems to vary length and swap between thumb turns and double cylinders.

I carry so many of these i had to make custom wooden boxes to house them. I also carry both finishes with at least 3 of each size in every size of the assec range plus thumb turns and also some higher security ones as well.Assecc have now extended their range to include offset thumb turns so got to stock up on those as well now.

Not such much an odd sized euro but an odd choice of size. Last Friday I fitted a 60/40 thumbturn to a uPVC door which left a nice flush finish to front of the handle plate on front. What's odd about that? Nothing...except it replaced a brand new 30/30 which was virtually hidden inside the handle set and didnt allow the key to turn! Turns out the previous owner of the house had taken the old cylinder with them and bought the 30/30 cyl especially, tho I guess they didn't realise they came in different sizes!

The make was FEB. It was fitted to a upvc door for a store room at a Shell garage. No locking strip but a panic bar fitted so the cam had to go all the way through the door into the lock mech.
Had to fit the 70/10 as a temporary measure and narrow the bow of the key so that they could lock it.

90/10! Good grief!

toomush, does your van quiver in fear as you drag the boxes towards it? I'm worried the handles are going to break off my roller tool box due to the dead weight. I keep a range of wafer locks and other bits in the same box.

Then I've got a few other boxes, with BS locks and non-BS locks in them, also both crushing heavy. Tonnes of blanks, etc. Good job my van's rated to 3.5 tonnes max!

zeke, have you got a website or link to any of those variable systems?

NKT ive made up boxes from plywood with rope handles.Ive still got some plastic boxes but as they break i make a new box from ply. .Im carrying enough weight especially as i carry ply in the bottom for boarding up . The van doesnt quiver as much as the last one did , this one is is a 2.5L diesel so it can actually get up hills.

Zeke79

I am aware of and stock variable length EVVA scandinavian cylinders but have never come across this in a Euro Profile cylinder.
If you have any information on or links could you let us know.

Cheers

I too carry 3 of every size euro in both finishes. On a number of ocassions i've changed 3 or 4 euro cylinders all the same size on a single job. I'm also going to keep back up stocks of the more common sizes in future once i make room for them to cut down on orders.

Its the only way to go so that you can provide a proper service and save 2 trips or end up fitting something completley the wrong size. I too have had jobs with a few of the same size on one property. One property had 5 of the same size as it had french doors on a bedroom balcony as well.

At the end of the day it impresses the customer when they see a fully stocked van and also you can do the job straight away.Showing a customer a product straight away isnt the same as showing them a picture in a book.
The other day i got an easy upgrade on a basic digital that had failed by showing them a unican 7000 series and a cheapy alongside it, the unican sold itself.Sure you can do this job with hardly any stock from the back of a car but your also losing money from not having the choice.

Well I have looked on evva's site and oddly enough I dont see it there. It says you can request it on their cylinders however. I have some half cylinders in the modular system but no posts and cams or I would show how it works. Maybe noah can show a bit of it as the evva cutaway set I sold him is in the modular system but only demos the 30/30 but you will get the idea.

Ive only seen the evva scandinavian modular system, its in the form of packing pieces. The councils round here use the assa systems for key control with packing pieces too.
