Padlock Shims

Postby rougefive » 10 Jan 2004 3:01

I like playing around with padlock shims, on different padlocks that i encounter. But i have never been able to find a standard dial combonation lock, to shimmy. So i was wondering if it were possible to use te shims on these locks. Theres a picture of the lock in question at http://locker.masterlock.com/combo_padlocks.shtml

I've been told that yo can and seen videos of it happening; that's the plus side. The down side is that I wrecked ten shims trying.

compromising combination padlocks

Postby Red » 10 Jan 2004 11:10

rougefive,
We sell a book on the site entitled "Opening Combination Padlocks- No tools No Problem" here:
http://www.lockpickshop.com/page/LPS/PROD/BTT/ocp-p

I took a look through it and you don't need any tools at all. It contains different formulas that you can manipulate any combo lock using only your lock, a pen or pencil and a piece of paper! It seems pretty straightforward.

I am not suggesting you buy the book from us- check for it in the library or see if you can get it on the cheap from Amazon or Half.com. Here is the ISBN: 1-58160-368-1

Hope this helps!

Hi,
I'll try to hunt down the instructions for you and see if I can scan them and send as an email attachment. I'm not in the office today so it won't be until tomorrow. If you want the instructions please PM me with your email address.

This should help you open the lock first of all.

To use the decoder, you really need a Sesamee lock you have the combination for to "learn" on. THe instructions aren't easy to just apply blindly. I have them somewhere, I just have to dig them out.

I have a friend who can open combo padlocks, like those used on lockers, with no tools and he does not need the combination. I have watched him on numerous occassions simply pick a lock up, manipulate with his hand for about 2 seconds, then pull it open. He does not know the combinations to the locks because he has done it to numerous locks in my house that I did not give him the combinations for and he does not take the time to crack the locks combination. I was wondering if anyone else knows anything about this technique because he refuses to tell me how and I cannot find anything about it on the internet.

Can you give us more specifics on this?

I'm not aware of any tricks that would open a padlock anywhere near that fast without using tools.

I can't be very specific about what he does but he basically applies pressure to certain areas on the lock, the latch in particular, then pops the thing open. I can't be very specific because he refuses to tell us how and he does it behind his back now so we won't be able to see what exactly he does. The reason he can do it so fast is that he is NOT entering in a combination of any sorts. In fact, I don't think he even touches the dial. I don't know how he figured this out (he claims to have taught himself but I dont see how that is possible) so I was tryin to figure out if anyone els could do this.

What brand of combination locks?

I posit that your friend is probably shimming the locks. Without touching the dial, or without having a set of locks with a key override, there leaves very few options.

I'd agree. IF he's good with shims, he could do it pretty quickly, and if he's doing it behind his back, you don't really know if he has tools or not, right?

the problem with that theory being that I have seen him do it out in the open without tools (unless he somehow hid them right in front of me) but now that I've started to watch him carefully to see how he does it he has started to do it behind his back because he does not want anyone to know how he does it. Dont ask me why, but he just doesnt want to show anyone. So to be using any tools, he would have to have been able to hide them from me the first few times he did it in front of me.

The more I look at this thread, the more I become sure that your friend is using shims. To be able to open a combo lock in a timeframe which others require more of to dial a valid combination, he has to be using sleight of hand to conceal his methods. If, as you say, he's started to manipulate the lock behind his back, does that not give you some form of indicator that he's trying to hide something?
Image If it ain't broke.....pull it down and see how it works anyway!
