Master 175 Chopaway

I butchered one of these yesterday (it was old and of no use to me) in hopes of finding a clue on how to open an abus 180 since they look almost identical. still no luck with the 180, but here are some pics (they ain't pretty) if anybody else wants to see some of the guts of a 175.

for those who don't know, the master 175 is a 4 wheel changable combination padlock. It can be manipulated, as covered elsewhere but it is somewhat more difficult than other locks of this type.
To open the lock, the numbers must be set, and then the shackle must be pushed down, and it will spring open if the combination is right.

Here the combination is set randomly (it's not the right combo).
notice on the second wheel there is a notch that could act as a false gate when decoding this lock, although i believe the true purpose of this is to make sure the wheels are lined up properly before you can change the combination





Here the flat spots are lined up, this is what you are trying to accomplish when you manipulate this lock.




then you have to rotate each dial 2 numbers down (7 becomes 5) and the flat spots are now lined up at the top.



Push the shackle in, and notice the "fingers" between the dials have moved down into the space that results from having all the flat areas lined up at the top.



The padlock is now open

change key inserted (it won't go fully in if the shackle is closed or the wheels are not aligned to the combo)

what this does is pushes the copper-colored inner wheels to the right, so the numbered wheels can be rotated independently of them. when you remove the key the notch on the left of the inner wheel fits into a slot on the numbered wheel and that becomes the new number needed to bring the inner wheel to the proper opening position.
