Smallest lockpicks?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Smallest lockpicks?

Postby Stinger » 23 Sep 2006 12:16

And we are not talking about small, like the jackknife versions or the credit card picksets. Small meaning slim, thin and good for narrow and long keyways.

I've only used southord slimline sets for years and finds them very good and reliable. However I've come to the poing where I would like to add some new picks to my set. And since I'm mostly picking EU and narrow security locks the thing I'm looking for is thinner picks. That's thinner than SO slimline picks. Does this even exist?

Please note that I'm very pleased with my SOs picks and ahve no problems picking with them. But as you can understand, if I'm going to upgrade at all, I don't want to go larger, only smaller.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I've thought about petersons for a while, but after seeing this picture -

http://www.anarkey.net/images/pick-blades.jpg

- I don't really think there's a difference. Actually hpc looks smallest.

Those "Deep cut picks" sounds good though. But $42 is a lor for 3 picks and maybe they are just pertersons version of slimline.

But I guess slimline is about as small as they get.
Maybe I'll get a set of "make them yourself" picks and have a go.

Thanks

I posted the "Just Picks Stainless Slender Set", as well as the "Deep Access." The picture you posted is just a regular Peterson with dipped handles, but you wouldn't even be able to tell the thickness from that picture. The stainless slender set is 0.015" thick, which is about as thin a pick as you will find. Also, not included in that set is the stainless slender "reach" pick, which is one of the best picks for getting around some paracentric keyways (shown on this page http://peterson-international.com/i-CORE.htm).

And yes, I will add that they are expensive, as are most of Peterson's products, but they are better quality than most other brands.

They do indeed look nice. I don't know the thinkness of slimlines, but 0.015 seems to be a bit thinner. Think I'll go for the "Just picks slender set" and then maybe the two "reach slender picks".

so you know, the SO hook in there IS NOT the slimline one. cuz i have both the slim and the reg ones. (and some modified ones....hehehe)

so that is definately the regular SO hook in that picture.

one thing i did, i didnt find a decent use for the deep hook, it was too tall for me to get it into any lock, so i sanded off like half of it to make it a regular hook, it is bleeping awesome. i think it might work better than the regular hook. and instead of having a flat top, i rounded it off a bit.

I've now decided to try the two single slender picks (Gem and Reach) and maybe the "just picks slender set". But where to buy them? My usual store (lockpicks.com) don't carry the Reach pick and since I'm not a locksmith I can't buy from peterson. The only other page I can find that sells both picks are www.hawleylocksupply.com - but you also have to be a locksmith to buy from them.

Any ideas?

Thanks

They look great. But I can't really say how thin they are since they are laying on the side.

I hope someone can answer my question about were to get the mentioned peterson picks. All the usual sites don't carry them all.

If those are wiper blade, then they are way, way thicker than the slimline Peterson picks. I was chatting with him a few weeks ago, and it turns out that he uses some crazy expensive steel for them, and that's why you can abuse them so much without breaking them. Too expensive for me, though, even at the show price. But if I had had the money, I'd have bought them!

Yes - but where would you have bought them? I can't find any site that sell the mentioned peterson picks (slender set amd the two single slender picks) - and I can't buy directly from peterson.
