also I have one more thing, the long pick that you made the one in the middle, if I wanted to could I cut it into? to make 2 or would they then be to short?

I made two picks, but only because when I was straightening it, the pin broke - got to use pyro's heating technique, but I figure that if you're that desperate to spend time on makeing picks out of bobby pins (the first dozen times you make picks, that is), then there's something wrong.. :)
Oh look! it's 2016!

Talk about a robust bra!

How long do these bobbi-pin picks usually last? The metal it's made of seems pretty strong, but I've never played with it to see exactly how strong it is.

I'm not sure either...

I'll work on mine next week and get some pics up...if I don't like them I'll just get some hacksaw blades...

I need to find a clamp so I can finish my tension wrench...

I made two tension tools from hairpins, the first one broke after a couple uses-- I think when I made it I bent it too far and it was weak.

The second one has been going strong for a while now, I use it everyday while I'm at work picking a padlock for the last 2 weeks. The pick I made has held up strong also for the same time period.
The only wear they have is from me filing them to shape them a little bit, and I think the brass padlcok is wearing more than they are.

Hope that helps.

bobby pins indeed

Postby pickersRus » 20 Aug 2004 10:12

Yes indeed you can use bobby pins for both picks and tension wrenches. Although the feel you get from them will not be near as good as a purchased set of picks because of the elasticity of the metal used for bobby pins. Also remember that it will be trial and error at least for the first few times at bending the pins. I have not used bobby pins in a long time but in years past I did use them with some success. I have only recently gotten back into picking seriously and have not tried bobby pins on newer type locks but I am sure it will still work just as it did in the past with a little skill , patience and a lot of luck. Good luck
