europrofile locks look like a cylinder with a big thick bulge where the top pins are, but most locks in N america are round cylinders with the plug set eccentrically, when you turn one of these round cylinders upside down, it can make it hard for the tailpiece to do its job, as it will be out of alignment, but a lot of locks are installed by people who cant be bothered to read instructions and rely on brute force and stupidity to guide them, so it is not totally uncommon to see upside down installations especially on cheap landlord property.
