master padlock rivets

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

master padlock rivets

Postby Peter Martin » 28 Sep 2006 10:01

There have been previous discussions about how to disassemble the Master laminated padlocks.

I thought I should add this information: the easiest way to make sure you can reassemble this is NOT to grind or shear off the rivet heads flush. Instead take some time and remove the edges of the peened rivet, leaving a stump sticking up. Then pull the bottom plate off.

You can remove the peened edge of the metal with a "hollow mill" or carefully with a Dremel tool, just cutting the edge off the rivet, and then filing around the remains to leave the stump. This method should leave enough metal that you can reassemble the padlock by peening the remaining rivet that sticks out.

I haven't been able to find replacement case rivets for Master padlocks. If anyone has a source, please post.

We have used nails in the past. Not myself, but in our shop it has been done. Just need the right diametre and length.

Finishing type of nails, with the small heads. Not flat large headed nails.

FYI - they are not sold seperately

Postby Peter Martin » 29 Sep 2006 10:55

FYI: I got this response from MasterLock to see if they sell the rivets as replacement parts:

Masterlock (Email from Masterlock Web Site) [Masterlock@mlock.com]

Thank you for your email.

Master Lock does not sell the rivets separately as a result of the importance of how they are formed and the pressure/operation required to form them correctly.

Speaking of Master Lock rivets they have improved them greatly in their commerical and newer No 3, etc locks. The older No.1's and 3's you used to be able to take a chisel and a hammer and break apart the lock body. You cant do that anymore. The rivets are much stronger. The shackles also are made of a better grade of steel. One could just take a chisel and hammer and with 3 or so hits drive it clean through the shackle.I dont want to get into destructive entry to much, but I think being able to drive a chisel through a 5/16th" shackle with a framing hammer is pathetic. Atleast they improved their padlocks now.
