How to make a Best Cut Away?

Postby Exodus5000 » 1 Oct 2006 17:28

I've searched and the best I could find was an ebayer selling one.

I've got a couple of Best SFIC's and I want to make a Cut Away out of one. I've made cut aways before, but those were just kwikset and brinks dead bolts, where I could remove the plug and grind away the plug seperately from the shell.

It would appear that there are two rivets on the back of my SFICs preventing me from removing the core. Any ideas on the best way to make a best SFIC cut-away guys?

I believe both Zeke and bpc have one....

From what I remember there was a cut for each pin stack, that showed both the pins and both shear lines.

As for disassembly, I'm afraid I can't help.

Some SFIC cores have a clip retainer instead of rivets. Look around a bit for one. The clip style is super easy to disassemble. The pic below shows a rivet style on the left and a clip style on the right. You will still have to shim the lock or remove the pins through the top caps to dissemble this though.

You have to blow them out from below. Find a pin capable of going in the bottom holes, tap until the top pins blow out. I've had mixed results getting them back in but with the right sort of punch and some finesse it can be done. The springs will get totaled in this process, and if you don't have an alternative source of IC springs, you could try drilling the top caps out I guess.
