Beginners Lock For "Beginner's Lockpicking Exercise&quo

Postby SteveOXIII » 1 Oct 2006 19:57

I'm a beginner and I've picked a couple padlocks. I read Digital_blue's "Beginner's Lockpicking Exercise" and decided that's where I need to start, I bought a Mountain Security 3007-105 Keyed Entry [Read: Doorknob] from Wal-Mart for about $8 USD.

Once you take the cylinder out of the handle, there's a little piece of plastic that's taped in place on the bottom of the cylinder [opposite the pin stacks] so that you can change the pins without taking the plug out of the cylinder and without using a plug follower. I hope this helps someone, I know finding it out helped me because I don't have a plug follower as of now and didn't really feel like taking the entire cylinder apart just yet.

I would imagine that they made them this way so that a locksmith could rekey the lock a little quicker and easier. If you know of other locks that have this quality, please post something here, I would like to know.

Warning.

If you do this, you can only change the pins, you can't take any out, If you do it'll drop the pins into the cylinder and won't let it turn, I forgot to add that like a jerk.

Man, Nothing screams N00b like three posts for one subject, but I'm used to being to edit my posts on PHPBB and this will be the last time I have such a messy post.

Anywho, I took the lock completely apart and there's two 'I' shaped security pins in this lock which is something I didn't expect for $8, if you're looking for a cheap challenge, here it is.

Yeah, maybe it screams N00b, but it always shows someone who is willing to follow through and make sure they include all the information they have.

The reason we don'thave an edit button is pretty basic. Its been abused. Its been abused so many times that it isn't funny. Posters in a snit have come back and removed their posts so that entire threads loose their meaning. Valuable information has been lost because somebody was too childish to control their temper.

So, as much as it pains me, and many other members the only people with an edit button are Mods and Admins. To be perfectly honest, there is at least once case where a freaking Mod came back in a snit and deleted post after post of valuable information.

I like that you did this three times, and felt the need to make sure you got it right. Thats says something far more than three posts will ever say.

Keep up the good work.
Romstar

P.S. Those "I" shaped pins are called spool pins. Similar to mushroom pins, but concentric ranter than tapered.

That really sucks about people getting rid of good information, I'll just watch myself and compose my thoughts before I start typing like a schmuck.

Thanks for being understanding. I'm trying to learn the terminology, but it's difficult with 10 different names for everything!!!

I had to take mine apart, which was a good learning experience, I saw up close and personal how the lock goes together, and I learned how far those little springs can fly! Amazing how much energy a little spring can store and release!

Its a good idea to strip a lock in a clear plastic bag until you get a hang of controling those springs

When mi re-pinning my practice lock,i just do it over a tackle box, with compartments numbered 1-6 and have the first pin stack in each one second stack in the second compartment, etc. etc.

I understand what you're saying. Haha, I need to get a plug follower to help control that too, that way I can lose one at a time instead of all at once!

First of all, you got it, no more blue font.

Second of all, what do I have to do to challenge the "Resident Drunk" title you hold?
