american 1105 core removal

Postby darrel.h » 2 Oct 2006 16:01

Today when I got home, I saw my dad cutting a padlock off the shed and I was like WTF. I went up to him only to find that the lock had already been cut halfway through. After he cut it off, I recovered the lock and now I am wondering how I can remove the core. It appears to be a removable core similar the BEST cores. Upon closer inspection, I find that the core is secured with what looks like a rivet. I can't seem to remove this rivet like fastener.

Can someone tell me if the core is an actual core and how it can be removed?

thanks
If all fails, use nitroglycerine.

there is most likely a screw underneath the shackle that will allow you to remove the core.

Actually, I looked there and it seems to be a rivet.

I don't quite want to drill it because I have a feeling that the "core"i sn't a true core but only a cover to the internal parts. Should I drill it?

Yes , the "rivet" or the screw is hardened .. use the dremel and carefully grind the 'cap" down a bit to hit softer metal.. then drill with a regular drill bit
You can buy a repalcement screw and cap for about $1.00 anywhere they sell american locks. Once you have removed the screw/ rivet the cover will pop off..... the cylinder is right there.... don't turn the mechinism with a screwdriver or other tool unless you want to have a handfull of lockparts

Or

Or, you could pick the cylinder, and when it opens, shake out the cut end of the shackle and look under it for a phillips head screw. that metal cap over the cylinder on the bottom is actually a hardend drill breaker, so it will make any cylinder drilling you try very interesting.

I had the same problem, My solution was the diamond tipped grinding wheels from Harbor Freight. There is one that is like a cone with the point taken off. It was the perfect diameter to grind out the bottom rivet looking part. I can't find the set that I bought. but HERE is something good. Good luck.
