are you serious?

it's just a standard padlock nothing special.... do you want how a padlock operates or how a pintumbler works?

yes i am serious. I know how a pin tumbler works, but not so much so a pad lock. I thought they both used a pin-tumbler mechanism, but if I'm wrong let me know. I'm only asking this question becuase i dont know how many pins a masterlock no.3 has and when i insert the pick it feels like some dont move at all...

oh,

Postby mccammog » 4 Oct 2006 16:33

and i just found out this:

# 1-9/16" (40mm) wide laminated steel body for superior strength
# Hardened steel shackle for extra cut resistance
# 4-pin cylinder helps prevent picking
# Dual locking levers provide extra pry resistance
# Thousands of key changes maximize key integrity
# Proprietary rustproofing for longer life

so now i know it has 4 pins .. also, will thesee dual locking levers prohibit picking at all? anything i need to know?

could be using too much tension or the lock needs to be cleaned

I was having trouble with a couple of Master No. 3's until today. One is 10+ years old from my shed out back (read: outside for a long time), the other is brand new. The pins on both felt tight and there was a lot of slop to the plug, more so on the new one which is NOT marked Made in USA.

Anyway, I found that I couldn't do squat holding it in one hand, but after mounting it in a vise and giving both my hands full attention and feel, they popped open in a matter of minutes.

will thesee dual locking levers prohibit picking at all?

No, that just means that prying the shackle up with a crowbar or some such will be more difficult.

make sure your counting the pins correctly. On some of these master padlocks you can push the pick beyond the pins and what your feeling isn't a pin. Also check your key. If it has very high cuts, it may be hard to feel the pin move. Check your pins with out a tension wrench first.

If your key has pretty even cuts, it will be very easy to pick, unless they are all high cuts.

GOT IT!

wellt hat wasnt soo hard!

and a note to anyone having a similar problem: the reason i couldnt open it is becuase i wasnt turning tension wrench enough.. once you get all the pins lifted, you really have to turn the tension wrench. (this was suprising to me becuase on door pin-tumblers, you only need a tiny amount of pressure to turn it.) so after lifting them all, make sure you really turn the tension wrench.
