OK...I had a question. For some odd reason I thought it would be fun to learn to pick locks, so I ordered up a book and a set of picks and went at it...
So far, I have figured out how to do a Master Laminated #5 lock and the door to my house, including both the deadbold and the other one. I found the Master quite a bit tougher, but still got it within 3 minutes. Are these even remotely tough locks or are these your basic beginner locks?
What should I be looking to practice on next?
Cheers...

very basic but we all need to start somewhere
fill out your locale so we can give you more specific info as per locks
I'd suggest looking for digital_blue's beginners practise guide and otherwise take a look at the new users section, first and don't be afraid to ask any questions just remember to try a search before posting.
If you're looking for locks to pick, buy some but, DO NOT PICK LOCKS YOU RELY ON
I repeat DO NOT PICK LOCKS YOU RELY ON, they can and will break, then your house/car/safe/chasity belt is vulnerable or unable to be opened (think: emergency situation).
Cheers,
UWSDWF

Those are not generally considered tough locks, but are good to start with. I would suggest picking up a kwikset deadbolt to practice on. It is generally considered bad practice to pick locks you rely on. There are, sadly, many threads around that iterate this.
It sounds like you are off to a great start. I would suggest you read Digital_Blue's tutorial and repin a deadbolt.
Welcome to an insanely addicting sport:)

Scary that we are now considering this a sport...MAYBE if we were doing it as some sort of new fangled doorbell ditch where you open someone's door while they are watching TV and say hi before running form the police!!!
Just to be clear, I AM tesing here. That would be highly unethical, not to mention obscenely stupid. Though...might have been a fun game in the college dorms many years back...pick the biggest football player's lock and see if you can outrun him???
Anyway, I will pick up some additional locks. It seems that the key is light hands and attention to the tension tool...just my 2 days at this observation.
Cheers
ps...I am in California

Yikes...sorry...didn't mean to offend anyone. AND I thought I made it clear I was 100% kidding AND undeerstood the ethical considerations. Anyway, that being said, my apologies. Again, didn't mean to offend.

doesn't offend me just alot of times the hypothetical is truly factual when people are asking about said info... we all kid around here, but not about that sort of stuff cause it gives the outside reader the wrong opinion, as well we don't know you that well (its kind of the difference between a stranger and a friend making a joke about ones mother, a friend you laugh it off, a stranger you punch in the larynx)
Cheers

Fair enough...Point taken...I'll go sit in the penalty box. Anyone got a dunce cap I can borrow?
Still....not sure I'd consider this a sport, but certainly a challenging and fun hobby.

NOT THAT ANYONE'S LOOKING TO PUNCH YOU IN THE LARYNX!!
You're fine. As U-Dub said, we all joke about any number of things, but the whole breaking into peoples homes is about as tacky as white after labor day.
Plus, typically? We've heard it before
And heck, yes, this is a sport! Some of our members will be attending the 2006 Dutch Lockpicking Open and our own Omikron won last years DEFCON speed entry competition, netting himself the fabled black badge to get into any DEFCON from here on out for free.
I can't wait for the day SI or ESPN covers an event.

How DARE you comment on my choice of post-labor day colors. Now THAT is grounds for a good swift shot to the larynx (though not the jumblies...that's cold!!!!).
As I said, fair enough. I'm a newbie and appreciate the guidance on etiquette. It never dawned on me that folkks would be looking to use info from here for untoward reasons...Guess that makes me naive...Jeez....Need to get out more, I suppose.
Wow, I never knew about competitive lock picking...that's a trip. Don't think I'll ever be at that level, though i am down under 10 seconds for this here Master #5 (I'm sure that's not good by anyone esle's standards).

I'm staying as far from this one as I can.
Cyloneus, just keep picking and you should be just fine. Oh and read, lots. There is some great material here to help most skill levels.
