small question on pins...

Postby toufu » 19 Oct 2006 0:00

ok well the southord C1510 came (slim 15 piece set)
before it came, i was preparing a kwikset deadbolt for digital blue's noobie lockping exercize...during the process of taking it out, i destroyed 2 out of the 5 springs

so now i hav a 3 pin kwikset, i can open it like nothing

now here comes the problem...when i try my door knob(dunno what brand, i just know it has 5 pins) i bind all the pins (i think :? ) and nothing happens...like all the pins don't give any pressure wen i press against them...and when i give up and slowly let go of the tension wrench i can hear 5 clicks....so why wont it open?!?

im just a noobie gon frustrated
pls help out

if after you let go of tension you hear all the pins drop you are in fact binding pins... and are probably using too much tension. the most common mistake of those new to lock picking is using too much tension. in most cases if you hear tons of pins drop you are over-setting the pins causing the bottom pins to raise above the sheer line and bind... try using less pressure with the wrench.

also dont pick locks you depend on. picking can and will wear down the lock and or cause damage... just dont do it...

Melvin has it right in both cases.

Adjust your tension, and really just try feeling with the pick.

Also, if you depend on the lock, don't pick it unless you have an absolute need. Cravings don't count.

Try to tension in other parts of the lock... for example try using the tensioner in the top of the keyway or in the center if you are using it at the bottom.

Try raking the lock 2 to 3 times before you try and pick it. Sometimes that will set a few pins and make picking a bit easier. Once you get the feel for finishing off the lock try only raking it once and then pick then not at all.

If you still can’t do it throw in the towel for the night try in the morning (well its night here it might not be there I suppose)

Try even less tension. If you can set pins with the amount of tension you are applying then you are probably applying too much… unless of course the lock opens.

If you still can’t get the bugger it might be dirty or tight (especially if it’s a lock that is exposed to the outdoors) a bit of lube (not wd40) may help the picking process along. You may even be dealing with security pins since you don’t know much about the lock.

honestly because I have a feeling you are still trying to pick your door your BEST bet is to figure out what type of lock it is (post a picture of the key if you want some help ID'ing it) then go to lowes or home depot and buy the same brand of lock and pick the crap out of that. I have a Schlage on my door... cant pick it for the life of me (yeah yeah I used to pick at my door when I started I think everyone does) and when I realized I was probably damaging it by trying it OVER AND OVER again I just went and bought a Schlage deadbolt. Now that I can pick it with ease I am content to leave my poor door alone.

Yes, Luke. Use the Force (but not too much when picking locks.)
It is not the pick, it's the picker!
