R70 OWNED!

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Went to Walmart this afternoon and picked up an R70. I was looking real hard at that Brinks shrouded padlock but I passed it up.

It took me about 5, five minute sessions and I had it open via SPP. I had to go digging for a standard tension wrench. All I had in my primary case was some twisty flex wrenches and they weren't gonna do it.

I saw Shrub suggest in an earlier post repinning the R70. I've looked for breakdowns on it but couldn't find any. How do you get this thing apart?

When i picked it somehow my pick can pin pick all pins in less than 1 seconds so im guessing it was a matter of what pick.

So i used one of my Falle curve with a flat top and didnt do it as fast but picked it under 10 -15 seconds one time

The key wont work in lock ive completly killed the pins

I got it, too...finally. SPP. I can get it in under 1 min consistently now. The crazy pinning was throwing me off a bit. The first pin is like a 9 the second is like a 1. No way to rake it. Anyway, I agree that working the tension wrench properly is certainly the key. Too much fun! Next up... the shrouded.

I just got one of these locks today. So far it's kicking my butt. It's by far the hardest lock I've tried so far.

And a Knockoff I got From Kmart called Fortress. The R70 ones were hard for about 20 min. Then I got it consistantly. The Fortress was just silly. Got it open in about 3 minutes, maybe less. The Brinks Shrouded is the hardest I have so far. I got it open 3 times total in like 6 months (I did take off for 4 months in between). I just haven't been consistant with it yet..

I have had the R70 for about a week now and have not opened it once. The amount of tension required feels ridiculous, or maybe it's just me. All I know is that I don't want to break my picks.

Ease off on it

Postby hippy5749 » 16 Nov 2006 9:00

You do need an moderate amount to move the shackle to bind the pins, but you have to use the minimum it takes to do that. The r70 has security pins in it. When you feel backward pressure, you need to ease off barely, then push pin down til you feel a pop. Hopefully you will feel the tension wrench move forward a little more. Find the next pin and repeat. Trust me, once you get the feel for it, it will get easier.....

Good job...

Postby hippy5749 » 25 Nov 2006 11:55

Good job getting it. Have you been able to repeat it consistantly? When you can, buy another one and look a the key first. Try to find one with high - low pins to make it harder. :)

This is the key to the lock I have now. It seems that the first is cut to the smallest setting available (look close because the picture quality is bad) and the second and forth are cut pretty deep. I don't know if this is what you are talking about but after practice I can spp it consistently in about 20 seconds. The lock was tough at first and still is when in odd positions. For now, I would consider this locked "owned".

That good

Postby hippy5749 » 30 Nov 2006 13:03

That's a good start, but look for another lock whose key has a deep cut towards the middle and surrounded by fairly shallow cuts. This will better help you determine if your pick is tall enough without being to big to fit past the deep cut. Again, good job :)
