When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

i am a noob at lockpicking, however, i can't have (only) a regular beginner's 5 or 7 piece sedt. i need a small set that i can take with me many places (i was thinking a jacknife) because, to tell the truth i don't really think that anyone would allow me to carry around a lock pick set, and i don't always want to have to carry the extra size.

So whats your question?
If you put jacknife into the search before posting you will get hundreds of threads on them,
Leave them well alone, especially as a noob you will simply be throwing money away,

I don't think you should be carrying picks at all. In fact, at this moment, I'm not even convinced this is the right hobby for you. Why do you NEED to carry picks around? I *do* carry picks around, but I don't *need* to carry picks around. And there's nobody to "not allow" me to carry them.

Ha ha.
1) Don't carry picks of any kind around. The most practical reason for you being that you are a self-described "noob" and you will not be using them "out in the field." Picks are not a fashion accessory.
2) Don't buy a jackknife. Learn with real picks or make some of your own. Really. People don't say this for no reason. The knife sets are novel, but they're not good for learning.
But, in the name of not being TOO preachy: if you do get a jackknife, go with the one made by Southern Specialties.

I agree with blake. You can't learn with a jack knife pick set. No matter how good it is, I have the one from southern specialties and it is nice, BUT you do loose a noticable amount of what we call "pick feel". Even with some experience, jack knives will be more cumbersome and you won't be able to pick as many locks. Plus you only get one tension wrench and that further limits it's uses unless you are really, really good!
Spend as much time as you can with a regular pick set practicing in the comfort of your home on practice locks not locks you rely on. You can carry your picks with you, just leave them in your glove compartment. When you feel comfortable with picking a few padlocks and deadbolts then consider the jack knife pick.
I was just having fun earlier. It just sounded a little funny the way you worded your post

Stick a small pickset in your shoe, and put a gel insole over it. I doubt anybody would find it.
Jeeze - I can't believe some n00bs are dumb enough to actualy need to be told how to carry things discreetly...

Are you that cranky Illusion?
So, he gets gel in his shoe, possibly a pick jamed into his foot, and if for some reason he is ever locked up the police find him carrying a pickset in his shoe.
Carrying it in your pocket openly is far less suspicious than putting something in your bloody shoe.
Although, I do commonly counsel against just having them on you for the sake of having them. There is no point in inviting a situation where you have to explain yourself. Although if such a situation does arise, just stay nice and calm and tell the nice person that you pick locks as a hobby.
Hopefully you aren't having this discussion behind an electronics shop at 3 am. Otherwise your new hobby will be far more, um, interesting shall we say?

Not usualy. No Romstar, the picks are in a case. I have never heard of the picks coming out of the snap-over SO pick cases once the case is securely closed. He wanted a way to carry picks all the time and not to get them noticed - I thought my post was a sufficient answer. Gel inserts aren't actualy made of gel but often Neoprene, and will not leak if a picks *should for any reason* stab into it. just stay nice and calm and tell the nice person that you pick locks as a hobby.
I think the OP really wanted to avoid the 'nice person' asking questions in the first place.

I'm with Rom on this one. Hiding your picks is just plain silly. Even more silly than carrying them for no good reason.
I keep picks in my car at all times. There have been opportunities to use them to help someone out. But I don't walk around with picks in my pocket just for the heck of it.
Having said that, I'm a 28 year old guy, with no criminal record, who does not find himself in "questionable" situations where there may be suspicion. So I could probably hang a set of picks as lucky charms off a diamond studded bracelet and parade through city hall and likely not have a problem with it. But there's no way I'd have gotten away with that when I was 15.
As well, please take the time to look into the laws regarding pick tool possession in your area. If the law says don't have 'em, then certainly don't walk around with them.
