Lubricant?

Postby cyloneus » 19 Oct 2006 15:58

OK...I'm just full of questions now...sorry.

I was wondering if it bade sense to give a shot of WD-40 or graphite down into lock before attempting to pick? Thoughts?

graphite.. maybe

wd40.. not unless you want to clean it after and lube it again

best bet is triflow bike chain lube or some silicone spray lube

and this has been discussed before searching is your friend!

If it's a new lock, then no lubrication is needed. If it's a used lock that doesn't seem to be in bad condition then try graphite (but not to much).

If it has been weathered for some time then use a liquid lubricant with ptfe in it, this can also be used to fluch out any dirt or contaminants that may have built up in it.

When the lock has not been in service for a long period of time, then soak it in WD-40 and hang or set aside to drip dry. *NOTE: Putting graphite in locks with existing liquid lube can create a muddy substance and make picking difficult and may need to be flushed again.

Forget the ky, and go dry unless its old, and rusty, and then if you don't have to pick it then don't.

I will always attempt to pick without lube first, and if I have no luck , I give it a shot of spray lube.
