I just need a quick question to get me on my way. How do I know a pin is set?

Well,

The bottom pin should fall back into place when you remove the pick, but when you press the pin back up, you shouldn't feel any resistance, this will tell you that there is no longer anything pushing down on it, and that it hasn't breached the sheerline itself. Now, this isn't entirely foolproof, but it's a decent litmus test.

The plug will turn a small amount that you may not see but will feel in the tension wrench,

A pin staying up doesnt always mean its correctly set and the plug turning doesnt always mean the pin set either but you will get the feel and with practise know the differance,

a few things i can think of: 1. the plug will turn just a little bit. 2. there will be a click, heard and/or felt, from the pin setting. 3. the set pin should be easier to lift than one that still has a spring pushing against it. if youre picking a lock with mushroom or spool pins, 1 and 2 will be of no use to you

also if your holding the cylinder in your hands and you turn it upside down and the pins move... you know they are set (unless they are security pins such as spool or serrated or something) this is kind of a crap way of figuring it out though.

I've never heard a click when a pin set? Has anyone else heard a click when a pin set?

Yes, I have heard a pin "click" when it has set, but thats almost never going to happen in most cases. Oddly enough, when you get the proper feedback from the tools, you feel the "click" rather than hear it, but because you expect to hear something it translates in the brain as both a feel and a sound.

The brain can be odd sometimes. Its this phenomenon that I counsel most people against, as when they are picking in a noisy environment, they can't "hear" the click, and rather than rely on their hands, they expect to hear something, and when it isn't there, they think they are failing to set pins.

In some very rare instances you will have a lock that does make audible noise, but it is very rare, and therefore I don't suggest that anyone listen for the click.
