Lock Picking Anology?

What's a couple of good anologys to compare hobbyist lock picking to? So far when I try to explain it I end up saying something like:

It's like knitting, or whittling. Just because someone has knitting needles, or a knife, doesn't mean they are going to stab you with them. I pick locks as a personal challenge, a hobby, something to pass the time. It's a lot cheaper and less harmful than going to a bar and drinking for a hobby isn't it?

You guys gotta have some better responses than that?

Well I can only tell you what attracted me to it. For me it's the art of manipulation, exploitation. On the line of hacking and phreaking, but those analogies may not make your friends feel any better. I also enjoy manipulating search engines, I make money doing that, it's called SEO, but it's still manipulation.

May be you could use puzzles or a Rubik's cube as an example? I really think hacking and phreaking come closer to the art at hand. But what do I know? I'm just a black hat, seo, Internet marketer, security consultant, lock picking, manipulator

The Rubik's cube is good! I'm a white hat. Our last 4 *INTERNAL* penetration tests, the guys had to come to us and ask for an account with admin access so they could do a decent test of our systems. We gave them a live jack DHCP enabled, and they hit a wall..... - Joe

You could say it's like bouldering. It's a series of moves, with a crux, that get's you to the finally. Maybe you can think of better wording than that.

i think lockpicks are more a direct threat to personal security than knitting needles are to a combat situation, so i understand when people are a little put off when i mention that i enjoy lockpicking. people are unnerved when they know you practice, for a sport, something that threatens their basic sense of security. when people ask me "why lockpicking?" i often refer to crossword puzzles or sudoku. everyone has puzzles they like to work on. some like paper games, some frequent and brief relationships, some buisiness transactions, i prefer locks. it's my puzzle. so be it.

i tell people its like eating ice cream, but they wont understand till they try it... then once they try it they will be hooked and will totally forget to ask you about the ice cream thing...

I've said this before on another thread, but it can apply here too.

It's truly amazing the reaction you get from most people about lock picking!

You tell them you pick locks and they suddenly look at you like they are gasping for air!

You can imediately remedy the situation by simply saying one word...

"Locksmith"

To which they respond with a gratifying sigh of relief followed by...

"oooh"

If you wanted to mess with their heads, come back with this...

"Just kidding, really a theif!"

I'm not sure why i think it's this but i think lock picking is like ice sculpturing..

looks really cool when someone else does it.. much more fun when u do it yourself..

no one knows what the hell tools u use to do it until u see someone else use them.. or u learn it urself. u use ur hands a lot and if u lost an arm, u'd be stuffed.

easy to try out and fiddle around.. but very difficult to master. ur objectives are complete only when you're finished.

takes yonks to learn when u first try out.. gets easier and quicker with practice.

not many people has it as a hobby but the wow factor is through the roof.

I've always liked this one:

Lock picking is kinda like doing a jigsaw puzzle... in the dark.

It's WAY challenging, and all you've got to go on is feel.

That's always worked well. I've also been known to say "Like doing a Rubiks Cube in the dark", though in retrospect, the jigsaw analogy is better.

Picking locks is like girls, it sucks all the life out of you but puts a smile on your face after successfully completing the act.

Only big difference is you can have all the locks you want and none of them will get jealous.

I do it for many reasons:

1.) Its fun.
2.) Its challenging, I like to be challenged.
3.) I like exploiting things.
4.) Someone says something can't be done or its safe, I like to prove it wrong.
5.) Physical security

Yeah best reasons I can think of that I like to pick locks...
