Travco Combination Lock

Postby Tennessee R » 26 Oct 2006 2:33

I don't know if these type of questions have to go onto the Advanced forums, or not, in the rules, it says: "19. Discussion of topics deemed "advanced" are reserved for the advanced forums. These topics include bypass of high security locks, safe lock manipulation, advanced pick tools, and automotive bypass & picking discussion. "

As I have seen some threads on simple combo locks (this is not a question about a safe) in the regular user section, I decided to at least go ahead and ask. If the moderators think it best to remove the post, I understand.

But anyway, I have a Travco combination lock, it is older,
I have tried the Master-lock method, finding the last combination, working from there, but, naturally, it doesn't work. ;) (Although, the afore-mentioned method does work on my Master lock)
I remember the combination, but I would like to be able to open it without it. Is there any advice, or info someone can share?

By the way, I have searched the forum, and couldn't find any results on Travco anywhere. I don't know if it's an unusual brand or what.
I did find these,
viewtopic.php?t=15081&highlight=master+combination
viewtopic.php?t=15824&highlight=master+combination
viewtopic.php?t=12866&highlight=master+combination
but they all refer to the master lock, as well as everything I've found so far on the internet, nothing so far on other methods or brands.

Also, when I open it, sometimes, after I turn to the last number, I have to wiggle, pull several times, and otherwise use techniques that don't seem normal. Is there any way I can make the action more smooth on it, and would WD40 hurt or help, do you think?

Well you certainly deserve to get your answers, youve researched the site, looked at the rules and looked for prior info,

That said i am unfamilier with the lock any chance of a pic?

They all work in the same sort of way and its basically finding your contact points that may be the issue here, they may need a very fine and sensitive feel to find them,

Theres stuff on matt blaze's site on safe locks and also howstuff works which may help you understand this padlock inside a bit more if you dont already otherwise you may be the first to find a way of working it out,

Reverse engineer it by putting the combo in and then see what you feel on the last nuimber etc etc,

Im no expert on these by a long shot but wanted to comment on what is a refreshing thread from someone so new,

Well, thank you for the compliment, and thank you for your help.
And the links. Those did help. Now I understand the basics.

Hope this works, I tried to put three photos here.
I took one picture of inside, the best I can, it didn't turn out very good, but, appears to be a standard mechanism (the fence, 3 wheels, etc), just like the illustrations in the howstuffworks webpages.

Also, it is made in China. They obviously don't have a website, but then again, they may be long out of business. As I said, this could be any number of years old, as it has been passed down to me.

Anyway, it makes no unusual sounds, and other than twice, when the second and third wheel engages, while re-locking, there is no special feel or tension.

Maybe I'll figure something out. I'll just keep trying.
I might have mentioned it, but my Master combination lock, I can get unlocked fairly easy. This one seems pretty tricky.

The lock looks like you can shim it easy.

yeah i tend to agree. since you already know the combination you might want to pull on the shackle and see where the "stick points" are, see if there is any relationship to where the shackle stops and the last number. after that your best bet is to shim it. use your search-fu and find out everything you can on "padlock shims". they are a pretty fast way to get into many master lock clone padlocks. usually faster then putting in the combination or trying to find the right key.

Guys, i think the point is he wants to manipulate it

The master lock combo tricks should work on that lock, its not good enough to have any special mechs that will thwart such things,

I suggest your perhaps just missing the contact points,

That suggestion popped up too when I asked how to open another combination lock.

That looks like a generic combination lock, it doesn't have the fake notches of a Master. Mine can be easily decoded my pulling on the shackle and turning the wheel. The number that it stops on is the 3rd number. For the other numbers, there's a different feel and a soft click sometimes.

Might work only for the brand I had.

Well, everyone, thanks for the tips.
I'm still trying. No success yet, though. I don't know, maybe I'm just not up to speed on the basics yet.

This doesn't even work on mine. The 3rd number is 15. Mine wants to hang at 35. I think it's trying to trick me. ;)

Well, if I figure anything out, I'll let you know.

Sounds like one of those fake notches that the master has. All the best.
