KwikSet rekeying

Postby concisexj » 28 Oct 2006 14:51

My friend asked if I could make a quckset lock take the same key as the one that he has. I have done this many times. Since I have the key for this lock I have no need of picking. The first thing I did was go to the kwikset site to download the appropriate pdf. (I'm quite aware that each manufacturer has their own little tricks) I followed the instructions (without their tool) popped the button locking mechanism but still can't get the tumbler out. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. P.S. If someone knows the specs of the special tool that quikset has I could make it easily.

I'm assuming this is a Key-In-Knob cylinder?

If memory serves, it's a small, thin, flat piece of metal that gets inserted along side the plug, pushed to the back, and the plug pops out. Of course, you have to rotate the plug to the right position first for this to work.

Hope that's of some help. I've had to do it several times on Weisers and I believe it works the same way on Kwiksets.

If not, I'm sure someone will correct me.

This is probably a Kwickset Titan or Ultramax lock. You need a working key with a square notch cut in the bottom (control key). If your discarding the existing key after rekeying, just cut a notch in the bottom of the key a fair width (say from cut 2 to 4) and turn the key around 120 degrees or so and the cylinder should pull out.

Here's a photo of a kiwkset cylinder removal tool. The Kiwkset one is above the ruler, the one below the ruler is made from a saw blade.
It works on the standard cheap 5 pin locks.
Hope this help a little.

It would help us if post a pic of the lock so that we properly identify it and give the appropriate advice

Thank you guys but I created a tool from a saw blade just like the one described and it worked great. Just wish I had seen the photos first ;)
