Last week I received my C1510 slimline pick set from South0rd.
I started to try to pick a padlock on my gate but couldnt get it so i put it back before family saw me messing with picks which I dont want.
So I decided to go by a lock at lowes. Went there and had a 20 on me so I picked a Kwikset deadbolt for $14 after seeing on the package that it said it was pick resistant.

So I thought I would get my money worth and learn something. I took it apart and didnt notice the pins where a set of bottoms that touch the key(these pins have beveled edges.) and a set of tops(no bevels). so I was putting it together wrong at first and it would acted funny so I took the pins out again and figured it out right.
So I put three sets of pins in there and had it picked with the lazy curve type hook pick within about 3 minutes.
I did this over and over again holding the pick different ways and looking and not looking, trying to get a mental picture of the inside of the keyway. Next day I tried to pick it with all the pins but when starting from back to front (thought I read somewhere going this direction was proper) the last pin would pop back out by thr time I got to the front. So I started going from front pins to back pins and I now I can pick this lock in under 30 seconds with all 5 pins. I feel like I shoulda bought a grinder and some hacksaw blades instead of a pick set. theres a good video on youtube of how to make tension wrenches and picks, I only liked so far the lazier hook, but im pretty happy with my South0rd but I shoulda got the cheapest slimline set they have. All in all this has been really fun and I immediately learned how to rekey locks and rekeyed mine according to key, so I did really learn alot withing 48 hours.
I do have a question tho, is there a web site I can find pins and springs and the other loose pieces for rekeyables, are they mostly vendor specific or for say the same type of deadbolts are they all pretty much the same?[/img]

Why don't you want you parents to know about lock picking ?
You can search for a "kwikset pin kit" on ebay, that would rekey kwiksets, or a LAB pin kit will fit almost all rim and mortise locks.
Both of those should contain springs.
If you dont wanna shell out big bucks on a pin kit, you can buy springs and pins on here in the BST section.

Uh I just dont want anyone ever to know I can pick because what if something gets stolen from them? they will automatically think I did it...
I was just wondering if basic pins are all the same I know there are mushroom types too but the basic ones all the same?

If some thing gets stolen, do they automatically think it was you any way?
Either way it shouldn't make much difference

Assuming that everybody is able to use the mass of brain in their head, you assumption is correct. I do however sympathise with the fact that some people are thick as mud and will automatically link lockpicking with criminals. Some people will always think this, no matter how much public awareness is created.

Most common locks you find at the hardware store will use the same diameter pins, however the length differs from brand to brand. Kiwkset uses 6 different lengths, not counting top pins or master pins. Schlage used still different lenghts form Kiwkset. You can buy a kit for kiwkset, but you won't have all the correct lenghts for schlage. You can buy a combo kit that covers both, or a generic LAB kit that will cover most brands.
CLK Supplies has a web site that you might want to look at.
http://www.clksupplies.com/shop/index.php?cPath=21
You also can search ebay and find all kinds of pinning kits.
Hope this helps!

If you put schlage pins in a kiwkset, they usually won't match up to a standard cut key. I you have a key machine that you can cut the key to the depth of the schlage pins you could make it work. Schlage lock have pins from 0 to 9, and kwikset are numbered 1 thru 6, older ones went 1 thru 7 I think.
To rekey a lock you need pins depths to match the key you are planning on using.
You could just put random pins in a lock, but you will have to pick it, or learn how to shim it to get it open again.
Next time you go to Lowe's, go to the lock counter and talk to the person that repins locks, they usually take the unused key they have left over and put them in a box behind the counter, if you're lucky you can talk them into giving you a few different keys. Tell them you are learning to repin locks and ask if they will give you 2 or 3 of those unused keys.
If I happen to be buying a lock from them that day, they have always given me extra sets of keys that will fit into the lock I'm buying.

So in the event that some alphabet agency was trying to gain NDE entry to my place, if there were shclage pins in a kwikset lock, what do you think they would do? pick it?
This is just theoretical as Im just wondering how those types regularly go about these things.
This will prolly result in more flames so keep em coming I guess.

That wouldn't make any difference.
1. You would have to have a key cut to work the lock so you could us it.
2. Someone who can pick locks can pick it no matter which brand of pins are in it.
3. If an agency wants to get in you place, no ordinary lock is going to stop them, they going to be able to pick it, use a snap gun on it, bump it, or probably use other means that I'm not even aware of.
If you can make the lock work with a key, it can be picked (ordinary locks, not special high security locks)

yeah I can see that for myself after picking this kwikset, I was just wondering what methods they would use, if they would go straight to picking or what...

my whole problem is with the notion that your parents would blame you right away for theft and that you are afraid that they will if they find out you do pick locks... do they have any reason to?
personally my parents knew from the first time I made a pick out of a safety pin. Even my father had a go at picking the padlock I was playing with. By being able to pick locks I've shown them that the standard locks on peoples front doors are only around to give an illusion of security. It was also funny explaining how a lock worked to my gf and how anyone with almost no experience can pick up or make a pickgun and open her door in very little time at all. The look on her face was priceless. It seems people like the illusion.
And really it works out that they know that I pick locks... how else would i have explained my Handcuffs that I ordered.... he...he...he.
