padlock question

Postby gloilin » 28 Oct 2006 1:50

what would you say is a really difficult padlock to pick? I realize they're probably all out of my skill level but I want to buy something really difficult to practice on and work at. I was thinking about getting an abus discus

Get a nice little Tri-circle.

10% the price of a Diskus. And if you're a beginner, chances are, this lock will keep you occupied for weeks, or months even.

I second that one, security top and bottom pins, available at wal-mart, six pins, and the keyway should give you a bit of trouble too. I just picked one up for...what? $7? I think I got it on sale though.

Also, they have these big golden Brinks ones at wal-mart, has security pins, but is much easier to pick. also you can disassemble it and swap out the pins for different ones, that are actually included with the lock. Bigger keyway too. But it's around $13.

clarification

for the guy who asked, I want to warn you that the posts with smilies are teasing you by suggesting locks so difficult that you probably won't be getting them open any time soon, and the people who suggested them probably haven't opened them either, thats just the way we treat nubes around here.

Some good intermediate level padlocks:
Brinks R70 Disc - Wal-Mart - Spool pins and strong spring tension
Brinks Shrouded - Wal-Mart - Serrated top and bottom pins, 6pins
Craftsman 2" - Sears - 4 spool pins

All are ~$10 or less and will keep you busy for a while.

Not to burst your bubble but for general information, the R70 is a lot easier then the Shrouded ;)

I have to agree. The R70 is a little tricky, though. I think it's the massive spring pressure that does it. After you pop it once, though, and get a feel for it, it will open easily in a few seconds.

The shrouded, however, had 6 pins instead of 4, and serrated pins top and bottom. Easily, in my opinion, the hardest lock available in a local store. Fun, though.
