Hardware Store beginner pick buying

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Hardware Store beginner pick buying

Postby PreGameAllStar » 18 Oct 2006 16:39

Heres the situation, lets say i walk into a home depot or canadian tire (hardware stores). I dont have much experience shaping metal and such and i cant wait the 1-2 weeks for my set to come in the mail, so is there anything i can just go buy from a store thats somewhat decent to use or to shape into some usable tools.
Im just looking to get started while i wait for things to come, any suggestions?

Remember, im not asking what to buy exacly, just need some suggestions form people if they have done the same.

Thanks

In order to make any kind of decent pick tools, you'll need - at the very least - some metal files. However, a dremel tool would be far more effective, and a bench grinder makes the job go even faster.

It's a lot to go through to make tools for the next two weeks.

You can pick a lock with all kinds of makeshift things, but it's a miserable way to try and learn to pick locks.

I'd say just hang tight, wait for your tools, and read everything you can in the mean time.

Cheers,

db

Do a search on this forum on "making picks" or "street sweeper bristles"

That should give you some ideas

but the quick answer is:

shaping tools
files
dremel with cut off and grinding wheels
(optional) bench grinder

make them out of hacksaw blades, stay away from the 'bi-metal'

buy some small allen keys to make turning tools

how to's are around the site.
keys, we don't need no stinking keys!

I could make my pick tools from an old cpu computer and shaped this using many files, and now it´s working great
