Repinning a lock

Postby Banpei » 13 Oct 2006 2:08

Hello everyone, I'm just starting out, and I got the 11-piece set from SouthOrd. I also got a small padlock, doorknob lock by Defiant, and a deadbolt by Kwikset. I'm having major issues with both figuring out the correct amount of tension to put on the torque wrench and with determining when the pins bind. I want to try repinning the door locks, but the problem is that neither of them look anything like the ones described in the tutorials on here. I've attached pictures of the locks and a closeup of the knob lock. Does anyone have any ideas or pointers?

Is there a small hole on the side of the shaft between the knob and body?

If you can see a tab or depression pin in the hole when the knob is turned push it in and pull on the knob and the knob will come off. Then you can dissassemble the cylinder.

ok so i was about to buy a deadbolt to pratice on today but then i found out my dad had bought a a comerical grade schlage dead bold that i can barely even fit a hair clip in but i thought i would go ahead and try to repin the lock because i have some picks on there way in the mail. so i take it all apart and put in a pin and assemble the whole thing. however i forgot to put the retaining pin back in so when i put the cylinder in the barrel it locked but then i put the key in and not paying attention i moved the cylinder forward out of the barrel just a little so that the spring that was holding the one pin poped into the empty chamber that holds a pin next to it. so now the the spring in stuck in the sheer line and i yanked on it a bit and it wont budge. and i tried useing a paper clip to push the spring up so i can rotate the lock but that dosen't seem to work. So what should i do??? :(

thanks

Pull really hard, shear the spring, and then find a locksmith to sell you a few replacements.

This is a common thing, especially when you are first starting. Don't worry about it too much, chalk it up to a learning experience and move on.

A lot of hardware stores do carry do-it-yourself re-keying kits. You could take the time to look for one of these and you would have extra keys, pins and springs. This would be a good thing to have, as the better kits actually come with a plug follower.

If you can't find such a kit, then your next best bet is to talk to a local locksmith. If you are stuck with one of those nuts who thinks that pins and springs are "restricted" then you have to find a more sane locksmith.

In any case, you can try to use a pick from the rear of the lock to raise the pring past the shearline ling enough to turn the plug. After that remove and see if you can salvage the spring. Otherwise, ust rip it out and replace it.

Is the piece of metal that holds the springs in removable? if so just push it out of its track and let the springs fall out of there then pull out the cylinder replace the little bar and then rekey it normally. (but if you did move the cylinder around trying to free the spring it is probably already damaged.)

So you can go to home depot and get them to give you a spring for it (usually they rekey them for free if the lock was bought there... atleast the one in my area does) but best thing is to do what romstar said and just pick up those cheap rekeying kits that they sell so you have spare parts... because once in a while you will pull the cylinder out without thinking about blocking the end and next thing you know your springs or pins are bouncing around and dissapearing on you.

Hi. The lock I was referring to was a Kwikset, but I actually bought a Mountain Security knob at Walmart which was assembledthe same way. I had no trouble poping the knob off, but I can't figure out how to get the plug out. I used the key to get the plug to rotate freely with my fingers, like the guide by illusion said, but I can't get it to come out. I was wondering if anyone has any experence with that brand of locks and if they could help me out, thanks.
