Falle Safe radius measurements

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Falle Safe radius measurements

Postby Peter Martin » 30 Oct 2006 15:07

From a few photos posted here and around the net, I calculated the radius of the Falle Safe "deep curve" picks. I attempted to make the measurements and calculations as accurate as possible. I didn't see this information anywhere else.

The benefit of this information is that it allows a person to use Dykem Blue (or any other layout ink) and a set of dividers to scribe the proper radius lines onto their steel for more accurate copies.

Here are my calculations for the radius (radii?) in inches:

#6 - 1.31
#5 - 1.42
#4 - 3.95
#3 - 2.77
#2 - 1.50
#1 - 2.70

If you have a set of Falle Safe picks and wish to correct these calculations with proper measurements, please feel free to do so.

Isn't "reverse engineering" fun?

a few corrections...

Postby Peter Martin » 30 Oct 2006 19:57

I made some direct measurements from the photos available and the radius are a little more accurate than my previous calculations (based on the chord and perpendicular measurement).

#6 - 1.40 (1-13/32")
#5 - 1.66 (1-21/32")
#2 - 1.69 (1-11/16")

Hope it helps... but as someone adroitly pointed out earlier--don't be limited by these designs!

If nothing else, it's refreshing to see someone use the word "adriotly". Nicely done. That's obscure enough that my spellchecker doesn't even believe in it. :P

Totally off topic, I know, but interesting none the less. The word comes from the french "droit", which often means "right hand". The implication is that right-handedness is associated with skillfulness and left-handedness is associated with clumsiness. Oh, those French. What a way with words. :P

then again, in heraldry, the terms for "right" and "left" (respectively) are "dexter" and "sinister". how's that for thought-fodder?

Yes, I love obscure words! "Parautoptic" is a word I encountered while reasearching the history of locks (the Newell Parautoptic lock), and I have started to use it ever since.

Do you hold your pick in your left hand? Is it easier to pick a lock in the CCW direction for you?
I never consider that you sinisterly dextrous pickers might have an advantage. :D
