only ever setting 2 pins on a 5 pin defiant w/ spool... help

ok, so here's the deal.

I have a 5-pin tumbler brand:defiant, and the pin setup is like this:


key way -> pin -> pin -> pin -> pin -> spool pin

so the back-most pin is a spool pin, and all the rest are just normal.

Now, I can pick it when it has 5 regular pins, or when it has 3 regulars and a spool, but for some reason when there is 4 pins and a spool, like shown in my diagram, I can't get anywhere.

Every time I am finished picking and give up to try again later, i only ever hear 2 clicks while slowly moving the tension wrench back.

Anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong..? Is this a common problem?

Sometimes you have to set the spool pin first, then the others, then go back to the spool.

The point, really, is that spools are designed to make picking harder, so if your experience is that the lock is harder to pick, then I'd say everything is working just fine.

At the end of the day, it's really just a practice thing.
