There are many different sizes of wafers. Often if I have to rekey a wafer lock and don't have the proper wafers, the wafers can be rearranged into a different sequence, giving a new combination and a key cut or hand filed to suit.
I was just called to rekey a Bobcat, as they all come from the factory with the same key (Keyed alike). It's the second one I've done for this customer. The Ignition only had 3 wafers, 4, 4 and 5 cuts. I was lucky to bring an Ameriacn Motors wafer kit that matched those wafers, so I made up a new code, something with 1s and 2s in it to be far away from 4&5 depths. When I went to do the door cylinder, different size wafers were used. I was able to file the inside holes of the wafers to match the key I made up for the Ignition, luckily.

Been playing with locks since '68.
