When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

My new job has offered me many opportunities... 16-28 guage steel (even stainless!) And, a bench grinder. I took the broken Sawzall blades from some stupid ass job we had to do and fashioned some decent picks out of em (very sturdy but 9$+ per blade)...

Can't edit.. The black one is an old hacksaw blade that I tried to forge with a belt sander... didn't work, so I decided to make it over.. see which blade I like best.

your hooks look a little fat, but they will probably still work as long as they fit. i definitely recommend thinning them out near the tip a bit

Good job, but they do seem a bit on the chubby side though. You can find plenty of reference pics as well as templates all around this site, a quick search of templates will bring up many you can use and apply to your metal stock.

Are these your first set of homemades, and have you tried them yet?

Yes, the hook on the left is very fat on the radius part of the pick. Thin it out and you will have better luck with it.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

My ruler doubles as a slimjim.

Fat hook eh? It's only 3/16ths of an inch.. the two on the far left are onces I made today for a friend.

I think what were saying is, it is not the 3/16" that looks fat but rather the thickness of the fulcrum/curve that will enable to maneuver and manipulate the pins.

The length of the curve (3/16") is not the issue, that would make the pick be considered a deep hook to lift short key pins to the sheer line without disturbing the adjacent pins.

Hope I explained that right.
