Picking Spools

Hey,

I'm really new to this whole lock picking thing, it sparked my interest a couple days ago so I got myself a set and have been practicing for quite a number of hours now. I can get most padlocks (tons here in the dorm building, on random things). So I decided to move up and try a deadbolt. Went to the store and picked up one that had a key whole for each side. One side I left alone, and in the other I took 2 pins out so I could start with just 3 to practice on. One of these 2 pins I took out was the spool style security pin and I have soon discovered that there is at least 1 more of the 3 that I left in the lock. I'm having a bit of trouble picking this specific pin, and even distinguishing which one it is. I believe it is either of 2 pins in there but am reluctant to finding it, let along picking it.

Was curious if someone could help me by giving a quick overview on what exactly you have to do to pick a spool security pin.

You're very enthusiastic but you've signed yourself up for some serious flaming. I'll try to save you here.

1. never pick locks you rely or others rely on
2. never pick locks that you do not own unless you have express consent from the owner
3. you'va asked asked a question ( although very well stated) that has been answered many many times.

so if you follow these helpful tips it'll make your stay here much nicer:

I appreciate the response, I look around but didn't notice anything that went into the kind of detail that I was looking for, before posting that is. I went through and located a tutorial on how they work and how to pick them, but I'm curious on another subject if I can ask it and not take too much flak .

When you are dealing with a lock that has a number of these what kind of technique is required to get them all. The tutorial I read seems like it assume there was only one, as you let off the torque and pushed it up while reapplying. If there is more than one of these pins, and you let off the torque, won't the one that was correctly set simply unset?

Sorry for the newbie questions, I really very much appreciate the assistance you guys have provided me thus far.

thats where pick-fu comes in. you have to release it enough to let the security pin pass by, but not enough to let the others drop. it also has to do with picking order, meaning the bottom part of spools are all going to be slightly different sizes, and the holes are all not going to be perfectly aligned. there is a spool that is "smaller" then the rest, and if you raise this above the sheer line first you should be able to do it without resetting all the pins. its really no different then the reason why you can lift the pins without resetting them all in the first place. just practice, once you get it practice some more, and then practice some more once you can pick the lock by only using the force.

as a side note... dont pick locks you dont own.... seriously dude.... just dont do it... its illegal and its a fast way to get yourself in trouble and make it so that no one around here will help you.

aight cool thx for the info. not sure where this not owning locks is coming into play tho. ive only tried on my personal padlocks and the deadbolt lock i bought from the store :p

oh yea, soz. i wasnt too clear on that. just a lot of people that have them, so i got mine and now some random people that allow me to give it a shot.
