M E Duffels looking for good 2 in 1 and curtain picks

Postby natastna2 » 6 Nov 2006 9:02

Hi, after reading a fair few posts in this great forum, I've concluded that in order to get picks to open most lever and sash type locks consistently i'll need a set from M E Duffels who only sell to lockies, I was wondering a.) how i could contact them, b.) how i would prove i am a locksmith, I have my own ltd company and c.) what tools you would all recommend from them, I live in the UK. Thanks a lot for the forum, its been a great help! :-)

I think your getting mixed up a little here,

2 in 1's are for non curtained locks and will only open those locks, any curtained locks need a curtain pick,

Buy your 2 in 1's from RB medical tools and your curtain picks from Duffells as they are the ones who sell the Chris Belcher picks,

Go for the CB picks as they are the best on the market and very well priced compared to some of the copies out there,

To contact Duffells ring them on 020 8761 2121, tell them what you do and own and that you want to open an account to order some tools and go from there, they will tell you what they need proof wise,

i like the francis triple pick, very versatile and opens most locks at a third of the price, i cant wait to take delivery of his fortress pick too, sold by aldridges in manchester and london.

I used a letter head and business card and just took a home utility bill to show proof of name and address. I also had my passport and driving license.

Hi, been doing some more browsing and i do like the look of the mark francis curtain tripe picks, I was just wondering around how much it would cost me for a set, also say i did get the mark francis triple would that be able to open virtually all mortice curtained locks, so then all i'd need is a non-curtain 2 in 1 pick?

I think you would be hard pushed to find a curtain pick that opens almost every type of mortice, if you want to cover all bases then try the full set of curtain picks and wires from chris belcher at duffels, or if just experimenting with lever locks try the triple.

Just out of interest how much would a complete set of CB curtain picks cost in relation to a mark francis triple? because my business is just getting off the ground, starting flyering properly today and as i'm basically a locksmith servicing the high amount of student houses in this area i come across lever locks rarely, with most houses being one upvc cylinder on the front and back and crappy 4-5 pin yale cylinders on the individual doors. Also I'm sorry abotu all teh questions but I find yoru answers invaluable, what wouold you say the majority of fairly low security lever locks are, curtain or non curtain? And would the francis triple be able to open 80 percent of these/ Thanks so much Ant.

The full cb set is approx 3 times dearer than the triple pick, BUT and a BIG BUT , the triple pick will struggle on chubb, chubb e , wont do rks and wont do fortress or new legge or securefast with the supplied wires, the cb set does all.
There are so many low grade curtain locks , so impossible to say what coverage triple has, the cb set does the lot, the full cb set is only available from cb direct or from duffels, the francis tool from aldridges.

what ever pick you buy will be personal preference, but either way it takes alot more than just buying the tool to open most curtain locks, plenty of bench time.

Much appreciated, I understand what you're saying but i plan on purchasing a lot of different lever locks and once i can open them all easily i will start adding lever lock opening to my advertising, i've mainly been concentrating on pin tumblers as that is 90 precent of my business but feel that levers is the next step. BTW this forum really has been a tremendous help in my setting up. :-) I think i'll go with the francis triple pick and start practising find out what the disadvantages are and create my own spring steel wires to compensate. Thanks Ant.

Hi, I've decided to go with the 2 in 1s from Rb medical first and to practice with those before going for a full CB set, i was just wondering which tools from this page http://www.rbmedicaluk.com/locktools/2in1picks.htm#safe you would all recommend. Thanks for teh help btw.

Just one question are you trading as a locksmith but dont open lever locks and only open cylinders at the moment ? How do you advertise to just get cylinder jobs ?

Is that a medical site, or a last name or something. Why would a medical site sell locksmithing tools?

hey

Postby natastna2 » 10 Nov 2006 7:24

hey guys, I just started the business a week or so ago, and at the moment im advertising for interior lock opening only as the area i live in is mostly students who have each interior room locked with crappy cylinder locks, the amount of time students spend locking themselves out of their room is quite fantastic! :-) so i'm brushing up on my cylinder skills, got a dino navigator set with some extra southord slim picks and feel quite comfortable opening 4-5 pin locks single lifting and am practicing on quality euro cylinders and yale front door locks so i can start advertising for exterior locks as well. Just ordered a 12 pc set of uk bump keys which shoud help in opening exterior doors. basically i haeva list of all the tools i think i need and am working on getting about one a week, I think in about a month or 2 i should have most of the tools i need including lever curtain non curtain. But i would definitely need a lot of practice before i start advertising for lever lock opening. This site has been fantastic in helping me decide what tools i need and just in general :-) thanks for your help. Ant.

I just hope you dont advertise as a locksmith as it makes the proper ones look bad. BTW interior locks could easily include all sorts of mortice and cylinder locks.

Im sorry but this isnt good in my opinion if only the government would licence this trade to stop this sort of thing.
