Recoding your cylinder lock

Postby Lucky1406 » 7 Nov 2006 13:15

So, I have just recieved a new lock to play with from Ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... &rd=1&rd=1

The strange thing is, that it came with 6 keys. Two sets of three. Each set having a security registration card.
The directions state:

"Operating instruction for recoding you cylinder lock:

Lock the cylinder with a key of this set (the 2nd set)once on the
inside and the outside with the door open

Destroy the first key set and the first registration card
completely! "

I was wondering, If I put the second set of keys into the lock, will the first set of keys still continue to work? Or would they stop working with the lock all together? I dont want to mess up my lock for the first set of keys.
Also, I want to pick this lock(though I'm not sure if I can) What possable problems does this different key system create? Or is it just like a Master key system? Making it easier to pick.
Thanks for any help. If you need any pictures, I'll be happy to supply them,
Nick

If worked with cilinders wich have the same features, the first set will no longer work after you've used the second set.

Now don't ask me how it works, i don't know.
And i'm pretty sure nobody on here is going to tell us

Then, if I'm picking it, and I pick it to the same key cut as the second key set, will my first set of keys work?
Or is that only if both keys of the second set are used together?
So I shouldn't worry about picking at all? Also, is this an advanced lock mods? Let me know as so that I wont ask any more questions on it. thanks

This lock sounds similar to a 'Builder's Key' lock. They are pinned with PK ball in at least one of the pin chambers. When the 'Owner' key is turned in the lock the PK balls fall into a special chamber on the side of the plug and the Builder's Key is not supposed to work any longer. If you pick one of these locks to the Owner key pinning, it should not work with the Builder's key any longer.

If your lock has that type of set up or a similar one, then if you picked it to the 2nd key pinnings, the first key should not work any longer
It is not the pick, it's the picker!

Thats what I was thinking, but then I looked at the warning label again, It says that you have to insert a key into both sides to change the lock to the new key set. So then I tried the 2nd key set on the lock, both keys turn the keyway. And I can switch between the first and second set of keys, and it still works. I think its only if I use the 2nd keys on both sides of the lock that it will change the key combo.

Yeah, its a neat feature really. If you lose one from the first set, or they are stolen, just ditch the keys and switch to the second set.

Lucky, was it expensive to have shipped?

It cost around $11.00 to have it shipped. But the lock is bran new in packaging. But let me tell you, I had to break open the package that it came in. It was a plastic shell that just would not open. Oh well. I'm not going to be selling it anytime soon. Though, I dont think that I'll be able to pick it anytime soon ethier.
oh well,
