I Picked My First Lock!!!

I finally went step-by-step and tried to pick a deadbolt pin and tumbler. It was a Kwikset so I don't think it was very difficult at all. I have no money to buy a lockpick set even though i have a job, so I had to use a paper clip for the pick and a small key as the tension wrench. My heart jumped a mile when i felt it turning. Good day.

Congrats SniP21, and welcome to the site.

Seeing others improvise picks from paperclips and hair pins happens quite often here, though there is nothing like using the right tools for the job.

If money is an issue, you could always give a go at finding some windshield wiper inserts at a local auto shop or supplier, the metal used for reinforcing the rubber blade is perfect for making picks and tension wrenches, and you can get away with using just files and some fine grits of sand paper to make them if a dremel or grinder is not accessible.

I mostly don't have any locks I need to pick besides the door to my brother's room. And that's the one I just picked without real tools. I also happen to have no money so if I wanted to start practicing and such, I can't buy the necessary tools eg:a pick, tension wrench, practice lock. I'm not worried because there is always my next paycheck... still a week away

Maybe upgrade to a hairpin or a safety pin for the pick - it will be more clear what's going on in the lock if your pick isn't all bendy.

My first pick was one of those wierd butterfly type real thick ones straightened and then bent into the right shape then dremmeled flat to make it easy to fit the keyway.

i too just picked my first lock only three days ago. I thought i would have never have done it. Congrats on your accomplishment and thanks to lp101.
