Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

i'm a newb in lockpicking, but i got to use my new hobby!

i'm a total newb to lockpicking, and to the site, but i figured i'd tell you about my recent experience!

i came across a southord mpxs-11 kit for less than 10$ here locally about a month ago, and lockpicking is something that has often intrigued me... so i decided to buy it :) i live in texas, and from what i've read, it's legal to sell and own, so i figured why not. i picked up a few locks at the hardware store (master, etc.) and have been getting pretty decent at it, mostly by raking, but i can single pick as well. usually takes me a few minutes, but i manage to use a combination of single pin/;raking and i can get most of them. had a helluva time with these american lock co locks... didn't know they had security features, and i've only managed to get them 2 times (on luck i guess).

anyways, my wife just started a new job working for the attorney general's office here in our city... she called me up, and told me about a new tv they were trying to install in a conference room, but the old one was locked to the cart it was on. they called a locksmith, but he wanted 60$ to come over and cut the chain! i told her i'd give it a shot, and would be over in a matter of minutes.

so i arrive, and go into the room, and everyone my wife works with is sitting around in chairs... yeah, no pressure here! so i sit down, hands shaking because i havn't had a cigarette or anything to eat :) i pull out my batwing rake (that's what i call it) and with one swipe, it opens... i was totally shocked... never had that happen before! now, i'm a younger guy (26) but i am dressed professionally from my job... it was absolute silence in teh room... i turn around and everyone is kinda shocked! i was like "umm... don't know how i did that, but i guess i'm done!"

story gets better. my wife's boss comes in and says, "hey, you think you can open this file cabinet in the back? we lost the key a while ago... havn't needed to get in yet, but we'd like to be able to" i said "sure, i'll give it a shot" this was a simple 3 pin file lock... single picked it in about 45 seconds... no big deal.....

even better.... then they come up to me and tell me that they have a computer is locked to a docking station with this type of cable lock... i've seen a video online about this specific lock, and how to use a ball point pen casing to open it. well, i asked for a pen, and shoved it in there, twisted, and BAM... open.

i tell you what, i had a CROWD by this point... must've been 25 people standing around. total luck on all these... but i totally impressed myself. :)

you should've ehard people talking... they were saying things like "man, i can't believe he just did that!"

made me feel kinda good...

just thought i'd share!

Well done and welcome to lockpicking :)

It can go the other way to - I recently got asked to open an Iver Williams trailer tow ball (wafer lock). I laughed and though easy, Well i couldn't get the bloody thing, very embarrassing. They had to do a 60 mile round trip for the spare key (with trailer and kit attached!)

Congrats, I bet you surely got some cookies for that visit, and have created a repeat business situation in the future.

Good job. And remember keep practicing, it all pays off in the end.

This makes me wonder how many people have things just sitting around that are locked so they just give up on ever using them again. If they only knew......

You could cut away a percentage of those people, as part must be tempted to open it themselves with force, and some will call a locksmith.

Nice one.

about a month ago i was invited to a house party and one of the guys knew i picked so he said there was a room that they didn't have a key for in the student house as they had lost it but wanted to store some stuff in, so i said ide give it a go...

By the time i got round to going up stairs to have a go ide drank WAY 2 much and started the display in front for a couple of guys buy dropping a tension wrench in a pint of JD n Coke...

Needless to say my experience did NOT go as well as yours. although i do generaly do most of my picking with a pint on my desk
