Do not duplicate keys.

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Do not duplicate keys.

Postby rescueguy » 13 Nov 2006 22:30

As they pertain to 40 to 70 kv switch gear.

A couple of observations. High voltage switch gear manufactured by chance has keys labeled do not duplicate on locks manufacured by yale.

We took a key to a local locksmith he looked at the do not duplicate on the key and refused to try. We put red electrical tape on the key and tryed about 45 minuits later, The poor guy didnt have a blank.

I am training 2 guys on compromising these kind of locks for emergencys. we have 2 picksets, My homemade picks and the new 4 pc. south ord set.

My picks work better, The southord are to wide Top to bottom and do not work well in the switch gear locks because of the key profile angle near the tumblers. Its like a 45 degree angle to the tumblers and my very fine pics work easyly the southord do not!

What kind of manual off the shelf pick set do my guys need?

Scores. Joe 3, Andy 0. Andy is great for moving large heavy objects though.

Disclamer. Picking locks on electrical switch gear is plain stupid if you do not know what you are doing once you get the big green box open!

Mistakes in this environment will lead to death. The obvious reason for special keys.

I will have to find the pics of the woodchuck that got into the switch gear. black greasy smudge with a little fur around it. Shut fashon square mall right down.

Play Safe.

Tracy,

For what you are doing, I have a bit of a tolerance for you, but this is nuts.... You can get some people killed!!! This thread is locked. Get in touch with some of the folks in charge with the SWP's (switchpanels) involved in this job please!!!!
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!
