How long does a picking session go for?

Postby Sl0th » 15 Nov 2006 4:58

Topic says it all. How long do you spend picking locks during one session? 15/30/60 minutes etc. Just asking that because after doing some picking my hands were getting tired after around 15 minutes. Will my hands get used to it after a while so that i can do it for longer? What are peoples experiences with that?

Honestly I have no fixed schedule but usually I’ll pick for about 10 min check new posts and repeat. I’ll do this for about 60-90 minuets.

I'll pick for around 40 minutes a day, or longer depending on what i have to do, for instance if i'm watching a film i'll pick through most of it and not really realise ive been pickign for over an hour. And yes over the years ive developed quite a large thumb muscle. :-)

I've picked for 3 hours straight without too much wear. There's no better way to pass the time on long flights home! My next 25 hour train ride will probably include 18 hours of picking between naps.

My guess is you are using way too much force in your picking. The energy you use should be no greater than that of lifting a feather. If a feather is too heavy for your fingers, then a bit of weight training is in order. :)

I usually pick for an hour through one of my favourite tv shows. I usually do this once or twice per day. Any more than that and my fingers start to get sore. I wouldnt recommend picking after your hands start to get tiered because your technique will get sloppy and you will become frustrated with your inability to pick your lock. Good luck and keep practicing

Pauly pretty much has my answer.

Although if it is something new, I will spend more time paying attention to it, or tearing it apart.

If its just another standard lock, I just practice blindly for an hour or so.

If your hands, wrists, arms or fingers get sore or tired, take a break.

You are training your muscles and you don't want them learning bad habits.

I have a few choice locks on the table in front of the monitor, and if I'm listening to a podcast or waiting for a download to finish, I'll grab a lock and pick it a couple times. But if it's a new lock, I spend much longer, 2-3 hours if it's a stubborn one.

I generally do it over lunch - 30-60 minutes every day.

Can you get picks on the plane? I thought they would take them of you incase you stab someone with them! And lock picks sound to scary for security to let you through, they will assume you are up to something.

I have never risked getting them confiscated, but always take them away with me, they go in the hold.
