it is easy to see both sides here, but the knock on effect of such actions is being missed.
If in every area a guy sets up just covering the easy jobs for less than it costs the locksmith for advertising per job, then he will get plenty of calls agreed.
But what is the knock on effects;
1 ) Many small independent locksmiths just shut up shop as cannot afford to trade or invest in a proper business.
2 ) All established Locksmiths look at what impact it has on their business, if losing 40% of their call out work as getting no bread and butter easy work anymore, they will double or even treble their charges for the jobs the incompetents cannot do, to compensate for the loss of easy work and being left with just the more complicated work. after all most locksmiths may charge £40 to £50 to open a door, but its the same cost whether its a simple yale slip or if its 2 BS3621 locks and a yale on the door, and still inside of 20 minutes because hes invested in his tools and stock.
3 ) The only loser is the consumer, now paying alot more overall.
I went to what i thought was a simple internal rim cylinder opening last week, customer claimed to be locked out of an internal door with yale lock on, simple job.
Except it didnt follow the script, i arrived to find an Iseo R11 rim on the door with dead bolt and not a nightlatch, master keyed and room keys also open front communal Door, On no account could the lock be drilled, what then ?
Last night went to an internal door, yale fitted but snib dropped and no letter box, customer supposedly had no idea that the snib had dropped, what then ?
personally if a joker just trying to cream off the easy work called me, id charge them 3 times as much as a customer.
If you want to do it that much and see it as a career, then go for it properly and fully , if you are looking at it as a way of just making a few quid, then give it up and do the trade and the customer a favour, i guarantee unless you set up fully and properly you wont last 5 minutes.

Another problem, is that the customer expectation has been set - they are expecting a service which costs £15. When it cannot be done, and has to be passed onto someone with the tools/knowledge, and the price subsequently goes up - the customer is not happy and either cancels or complains how the second person is ripping them off.

i never stated it was 15 pounds someone else did, anyway surely if you had a brain you could explain that to the customer, I'm still not dissauded by any of your arguments and it seems to me that most of you are just annoyed at someone trying to undercut you.

Well done to your mother for getting her friends to ring you up with lockouts; she must love you . But seriously, speaking as someone with experience of mental health issues I wish you well, it's nice to see you are trying and not just relying on Disability Living Allowance.
I live less than one mile from Stirling University and deal with a few thousand students; maybe they are a different calibre but I am lucky to get one call out a week from a student. Most of them have more keys than you can shake a stick at or just kick their door in.
It's also good to see that you have a degree to fall back on if it goes wrong but judging by your spelling you seem the type that can tell me the square root of a banana but can't peel one.

Explain what - that you had mislead them into believing they had called a locksmith. YOU stated £15 on a Sheffield forum, nobody else. If your business "strategy" cannot sustain critique, and you are not willing to listen to advice from those established in the business, then go ahead and make a fool of yourself. I'm happy to sit back and watch - I know my customer base in Sheffield is safe, as they expect a comprehensive service - not just an internal door opener.

Lets hope the flyers hes about to deliver dont contain as many spelling mistakes as his posts.
Oh and btw arent flyers an overhead or do you print them yourself on free paper and with a free printer ?
Believe me pal you are going to come unstuck big time at some point without the proper tools and equipment.
Oh and im not annoyed your undercutting me as im based in london where people quite happily pay the going rate. The problem you will find is when you try to expand your little sideline and start replacing locks etc, people will expect it all for the same price as most lockies charge to open up and replace or repair the locks for the same amount (lock price excluded)

Also is anyone willing to give me ten percent of teh charge or is that not the way these thigns are done? Thanks Ant.

All the while hes turning down the work hes building a reputation as the guy that cant do the job.
Keep up the good work son your reputation will soon kill your trade off as word gets around the university your unable to open anything. Also as he passes the work on to other lockies the customers build a relationship with his competition, you cant make this up can you ?

Wow i really don't hitnk ive been rude or abusive in any of my posts and i don't understand why some of you seem to be so immature as to call me disabled when all i'm trying to do is start up a business. Even if i was disabled why would that stop me from starting up a business. I've never before seen a forum containing so many immature pricks as this. Thanks for your useless comments and I hope you all do well.

Why is it that every time a thread goes in the direction of locksmithing in the UK it very quickly turns to name calling and immature behavior?
If you can't act respectfully, please find somewhere else to be a donkey.
